Westfield Matildas in Westfield W-League: van Egmond keeps up stellar form in City’s Derby triumph

Emily van Egmond cannot stop scoring and the Westfield Matildas star struck again in Melbourne City’s statement 4-0 derby win against Victory.

Van Egmond backed up her four goals in Olympic qualifying last week with her sixth strike of the Westfield W-League campaign, while Westfield Matildas comeback kid Kyah Simon was also on the scoresheet in the commanding Round 12 result which leaves City needing only one point from two matches to lift the Premiers Plate.

In-form playmaker Van Egmond had already fired two warning shots before curling City into what seemed an inevitable lead on 21 minutes, and she continued to pull the strings as Scotland international Claire Emslie notched a double to make it 3-0.

After netting her first international goals in 22 months last week, Simon had the final word at Lakeside Stadium when she pounced on the rebound after Victory keeper Casey Dumont repelled City captain Steph Catley’s low drive on 57 minutes.

Westfield Matildas quartet Catley, Ellie Carpenter, Aivi Luik and goalkeeper Lydia Williams played their part in securing a sixth straight clean sheet in a dominant 2019/20 campaign.

Jenna McCormick and Laura Brock started in the Victory backline, while Teigen Allen came off the bench, but the home defence could do little to stop a City side in ominous form. Victory remain Westfield W-League Finals Series places, in fourth position, three points ahead of Brisbane Roar.

Brisbane missed the opportunity to close the gap on the top four as Tameka Yallop’s goal was not enough to spark a comeback in a 4-2 defeat against Perth Glory.

The Queenslanders found themselves 3-0 down after 25 minutes in Western Australia as Clare Polkinghorne and goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold could not stop a relentless Glory attack.

After Morgan Andrews’ double and Crystal Thomas’ goal send the 2018/19 Grand Finalists into a big lead, Roar left-back Carson Pickett pulled a goal back and Yallop made it 3-2 on 57 minutes.

Elise Kellond-Knight did her best to inspire the competition’s fifth-placed side but a stoppage-time Ayesha Norrie goal wrapped up the result.

Second beat third in the Sydney Derby as Sydney FC extracted some revenge on Western Sydney Wanderers in a 3-0 win.

The Red and Black had beaten their crosstown rivals 5-0 back in Round 6, but Amy Harrison and her side could not back up that stunning result at Cromer Park.

Veronica Latsko, Ellie Brush and Sofia Huerta got the goals, as Princess Ibini came off the bench for the Sky Blues, while United States international Kristen Hamilton was sent off for the Red and Black.

Karly Roestbakken’s Canberra United sealed a 3-1 win against bottom of the table Adelaide United in Heather Garriock’s final home match in charge of the Green Machine.

Goals from Laura Hughes, Leena Khamis and Simon Charley earned the hosts’ three points at McKellar Park, while Isabel Hodgson netted for a Reds side with Sarah Willacy in goal.
