Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne City: match preview

Melbourne City have the chance to secure the first piece of silverware in the Westfield W-League 2019/20 Season when they take on Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday night.

If City can avoid defeat – like they have done through the first 12 rounds – they will ensure themselves of their first Premiership in four seasons.

And Rado Vidosic’s side will certainly head north with confidence, having thrashed local rivals Melbourne Victory 4-0 on Sunday.

With their Westfield Matildas contingent in excellent form and the likes of Claire Emslie, Kyah Simon and Milica Mijatovic combining well in attack, there appears few weaknesses in this City squad.

In contrast, the Wanderers appear to have hit the skids at just the wrong time of the campaign.

While Dean Heffernan’s side should qualify for the Finals Series – for the first time in the club’s history – they’ll need to lift their performances if they are to be a threat come the semis.

Their 3-0 loss to Sydney FC last time out was the Wanderers third defeat in their last four matches and they still need two more points to ensure a top-four spot.

Not helping their cause is the loss of star striker Lynn Williams, who has departed the club to return to the USA to focus on her national team duties.
