Western Sydney Wanderers release defender Ruon Tongyik

Australia Under-23 international Ruon Tongyik has become a free agent after agreeing to mutually terminate his contract with Western Sydney Wanderers.

The 22-year-old struggled to break into Markus Babbel's plans and leaves having made just two Hyundai A-League appearances for the club.

Tongyik joined from Melbourne City at the end of the last season and can begin to negotiate his next move with immediate effect.

Western Sydney released a short statement on Wednesday confirming the defender's departure.

It read: "Tongyik signed for the Wanderers in May 2018, however a series of injuries limited his playing time this season and the player and club have agreed to mutually terminate his contract.

"The club wishes Ruon all the best in the next stage of his playing career."

Tongyik appeared 17 times for City in all competitions prior to his switch to Wanderers.

The ex-Adelaide United centre-back made his Hyundai A-League debut in December 2016 and first linked up with the Olyroos the following year.

He was not involved in the Western Sydney squad which lost 2-0 to former club City on Tuesday.
