Wellington Phoenix given Twitter tribute by Italian giants Roma

Wellington Phoenix sent shockwaves through the Hyundai A-League on Saturday night with their massive win over Central Coast Mariners, even catching the eye of a Serie A juggernaut.

The Phoenix were given a special mention by Italian side AS Roma, with the Giallorossi naming the Kiwi club their 'Twitter Team of the Day'.

It’s an accolade Roma has been bestowing on clubs right around the world this season, with Wellington’s record-breaking win hard to ignore.

Phoenix youngster Liberato Cacace also endeared himself to Roma with his celebration after scoring his first Hyundai A-League goal in the rout.

The teenager wing-back celebrated by sucking his thumb, a tribute to his footballing idol and former Roma Superstar Francesco Totti.

Wellington isn’t the first Hyundai A-League club to feel the love from Roma this season.

Adelaide United were given the honour just before Christmas last year.
