Weekend wrap: National Premier Leagues

The finals season is almost upon us in the National Premier Leagues.

It was another thrilling weekend in NPL action across the country as the title race and relegation scraps took yet more twists and turns.

The battle for the Premiership in the NSW NPL will go right down to the wire after an exhilarating round of action.

Leaders APIA Leichhardt Tigers looked set to slip at up home to Bonnyrigg White Eagles and hand the ascendancy to Sydney Olympic when they were 3-0 down after 30 minutes.

But a stunning comeback saw the Tigers storm to a 6-3 win.

It means they enter the final round level with Olympic on points, but a vastly superior goal difference has the Tigers as heavy favourites heading into round 22.

A goal from Michael Domfeh deep in stoppage time capped a stirring fightback from Perth Glory on Saturday as they grabbed a crucial point in their quest for the NPL WA title.

The league leaders looked set for their first defeat in 13 matches as they trailed Inglewood United 3-1 going into the final 10 minutes at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium.

But after Henry Hore threw them a lifeline with his second goal of the game, Glory went all out for the equaliser which eventually arrived thanks to Domfeh’s late intervention.

It preserves a four point gap over title rivals Perth SC in second.

Lions FC remain on top in the NPL QLD thanks to a crushing 6-0 win over Gold Coast United on Sunday.

The result keeps the club three points ahead of second-placed Western Pride, who defeated Cairns FC 2-0.

Competition leaders Heidelberg United suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Hume City on the weekend, but the Bergers remain on course to claim the NPL VIC title.

United are four points ahead of second-placed Avondale who defeated Melbourne Knights 4-3.

Canberra FC completed a comeback from two goals down on Saturday as Michael Mensah scored inside the final 15 minutes to give them an important 3-2 win over Woden Weston.

That result ensures the side leapfrog rivals Canberra Olympic into first position. Olympic had their match against Tigers called off due to poor weather.

Having wrapped up the Premiership in South Australia last weekend, Campbelltown City rounded out the league campaign with a 2-2 draw against Adelaide Olympic.

Meanwhile, Adelaide City defeated MetroStars 2-1 to leapfrog their opponents into second place.

Devonport continue to lead the way in the NPL TAS with a 3-0 win over Hobart Zebras.

They now have a five point gap over Launceston City, who defeated Northern Rangers 4-1.

Edgeworth remain on top in the Northern NSW NPL after a 1-0 win over Adamstown Rosebud on the weekend.

Their Premiership credentials were improved with second-placed Lambton Jaffas slumping to a 1-1 draw against Hamilton Olympic.
