'We have to keep going': Honda urges Victory to build on Mariners triumph

Melbourne Victory are beginning to find their mojo, according to Keisuke Honda.

The Japanese marquee opened the scoring and inspired an electric first half in Sunday’s 4-1 triumph over Central Coast Mariners, in which Victory raced to a 3-0 half-time lead at AAMI Park.

But although Victory turned in their most fluent performance of the campaign so far, the 32-year-old says the Navy Blue cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

“The first half we played a great game, and the good thing is that we were concentrating well,” he told Fox Sports post-match.

“But you know, I am not satisfied and I think we can improve more, so we have to keep going and train hard.”

Honda notched the second goal of his fledgling Hyundai A-League career after seizing on a horror mistake from Mariners’ defender Antony Golec midway through the opening stanza.

That strike means the play-maker has been directly involved in five of Victory’s eight goals this season.

And while Honda is stealing the show as Melbourne’s midfield talisman, he says Victory will take significant confidence from an excellent all-round team display.

“To be honest it doesn’t matter to me, the important thing is that we won the game,” he continued.

“I’m so happy that other players scored and I hope that we will gain confidence from today.

“We lost our first two games and the reason [why] we keep winning is really good rhythm.

“But of course, we have to prepare well for the next game.”
