Watch: Le Fondre keeps ACL dream alive for Sydney FC in Shanghai SIPG stalemate

Sydney FC remain alive in the 2019 AFC Champions League after a pulsating 2-2 draw with Chinese champions Shanghai SIPG on Tuesday evening.

The visiting Hyundai A-League side led 1-0 at the break courtesy of Brandon O’Neill’s opener but trailed 2-1 via Elkeson and Wang Shenchao’s efforts before Adam Le Fondre’s 62nd minute equaliser.

Steve Corica’s side are now only two points away from second-placed Shanghai but will likely need to beat Group H leaders Ulsan Hyundai on Tuesday, 7 May to progress.

Sky Blues goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne pulled off two first half stops from Hulk, including one top drawer diving save from the Brazilian forward’s stinging drive, before O’Neill handed Corica’s men a 34th minute lead on the counter attack.

Shanghai levelled through Elkeson’s header 90 seconds after entering the fray as a half time substitute and took the lead when Wang Shenchao dispatched a cross at the back post.

However, Le Fondre rescued a vital point for Sydney with a brilliant glancing header from Siem de Jong’s cross two minutes later.
