Phoenix fall in Bentleigh boilover

The FFA Cup surprises began as early as the Round of 32.

Handed a tricky trip to Bentleigh Greens, who would go on to reach the Semi Finals, Mark Rudan's reign at Wellington Phoenix got off to an unforgiving start.

The former Sydney United boss watched as his team slipped to a 1-0 loss against their lower-ranked opponents at a joyous Kingston Heath.

It marked just the fifth time a Hyundai A-League club had suffered defeat against NPL opposition and was made all the more remarkable by the home side having to play with 10 men for an almost an hour.

Marco Jankovic header in the opener from a corner in the 23rd minute and the Victorian side drew on all of their FFA Cup experience following James Kelly's dismissal 10 minutes later to advance in admirable style.
