‘There’s more to come’ promises O’Donovan after netting first Brisbane Roar goals

It does not matter how, when or where the goals come, Brisbane Roar hotshot Roy O’Donovan is just delighted to get off the mark for his new club.

O’Donovan was on target twice as Robbie Fowler’s newly-assembled squad recorded a 4-0 victory against NPL Queensland club Brisbane City at Logan Metro Sports Park on Saturday.

Now playing for his third Hyundai A-League club, the former Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets striker has some big shoes to fill in Brisvegas.

Caltex Socceroos striker Adam Taggart netted 11 goals in 17 Hyundai A-League games for Roar in 2018/19 before switching to Korea Republic outfit Suwon Bluewings, where he is now the leading goalscorer in the K-League.

For Fowler’s charges to make an impact in the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season, they will need O’Donovan firing, and the Irishman insists he is only getting started.

“It’s great to score goals wherever the game is.”

“As a striker, any striker will tell you, it only matters how many goals you score. I’m happy with today in that regards,” said O’Donovan.

“But there’s more to come. We’re obviously building towards Sydney FC in the FFA Cup and the A-League is starting early October.”

Welsh forward Aaron Amadi-Holloway notched his second goal in as many pre-season games to open the scoring, and O’Donovan pounced with a quick-fire double to make it three at half-time.

Rahmat Akbari wrapped up the convincing 4-0 victory as Roar prepare to hit the road for a week-long camp and a match against Gladstone Select next Saturday at Marley Brown Oval.

O’Donovan admits he does not expect such a newly-formed squad to gel immediately, but the 33-year-old frontman cannot wait to get back out on the pitch with his new teammates.

“Again, we’re a young team with 11 new players, it’s not going to happen overnight,” he said.

“I thought it was a step up from last week, they way we played, and I’m excited now about next week.”
