There's more to come from me, insists fit-again Perth star Ikonomidis

Chris Ikonomidis is ready to rumble, and says fans can expect even more from the Perth Glory star next Hyundai A-League season.

The 24-year-old Australian has been wrapped in cotton wool during Perth’s pre-season as he nears recovery from the dislocated shoulder joint he suffered against Central Coast Mariners in April.

Ikonomidis returned to lead his side’s charge to the 2019 Grand Final, but scans later revealed the former Serie A winger would require surgery to make a proper recovery – meaning he missed out on the Caltex Socceroos training camp and friendly against Korea Republic in June.

That was an unfortunate blow for the Cronulla-born talent, the attacking whirlwind which propelled Glory to their first ever Hyundai A-League Premiership last season.

He scored nine goals and registered three assists, earning NAB Young Footballer of the Year award honours and a recall to the Caltex Socceroos, with whom he shone at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in January.

But despite the great heights he scaled with club and country upon returning to Australia last season, Ikonomidis says there's still more to come.

“I’ve never played in a team that dominated the league so much and won games with so much ease,” Ikonomidis told the club website.

“[But] I know I can do a lot better and that’s what I want to do this year. I want to build on the good signs of last year and really just give it a lot more.”

Ikonomidis has been back in training for the last six weeks but missed the club's high-profile pre-season friendly against Premier League giants Manchester United and has been restricted from participating in full contact.

However, he anticipates a green light in the next couple of days. Then, one of last campaign's brightest stars will be ready to unleash himself on his Glory teammates.

“I’ve been building on my fitness for the last six weeks so I should come in at a very high level of general fitness,” he said.

“Shoulder wise I should be getting to all clear in the next couple of days which is exciting for me.

“I’ve been doing everything [at training] except for that final game at the end. That kind of high pressure situation, I can’t wait to get back into it.”
