Sydney FC defender Aaron Calver joins Western United for 2019/20

Sydney FC defender Aaron Calver has become Western United’s latest high-profile recruit, joining the club on a two-year contract.

He joins fellow defenders Josh Risdon and Connor Chapman, as well as marquee Greece international Panagiotis Kone, at the Hyundai A-League’s newest club, which will kick-off its first season in October this year as the 2019/20 campaign gets underway.

The versatile 23-year-old defender, who can play in the centre or at right-back, made his Hyundai A-League debut for Sydney FC at the age of 16 in December 2012, becoming the club’s second youngest ever player.

He made 44 Hyundai A-League, four FFA Cup and seven AFC Champions League appearances for the Harbour City club, and scored his first Hyundai A-League goal in the 5-2 victory over Central Coast Mariners in January.

Calver said “I’m very excited for the opportunity to be a foundation player for Western United FC.

“I can’t wait to get down to Victoria for the start of pre-season, to help contribute to bringing success on the pitch, and also to play a part in building a culture in which the community of western Melbourne can be proud.

“For now, I’m still fully focused on finishing the season off strongly with Sydney, and hopefully I can go out a winner.”

Calver’s current side lie second in the Hyundai A-League ladder and face a crunch clash with Melbourne City on Sunday evening in a match that will be screened LIVE and FREE on 10 Bold or tenplay, and on FOX SPORTS 505, from 7pm (AEDT) on Sunday. You can also stream the match live on the MyFootball Live App, or by subscribing to Kayo Sports.
