Signing news: Young gun Thurgate commits to Jets

Becoming one of the A-League’s best midfielders is the goal for Angus Thurgate after he signed a new deal with Newcastle Jets.

The Jets confirmed Thurgate’s signature on Thursday night, tying the 21-year-old to a two-year extension to keep him in the Hunter until the end of the 2022/23 Season.

“It’s a great to sign another contract with Newcastle,” Thurgate said on the Jets’ website.

“Everyone at the club and the supporters have been really good to me, so it’s good to get another two years in Newcastle.

“I can’t wait to get going again, keep playing well and take my game to the next level.”

Thurgate is a product of the Port Macquarie region and joined the Jets’ Academy as a teenager.

He has played for the club in the NPL Northern NSW competition as well as the National Youth League, before making the step up to the A-League, making his debut in 2018.

Thurgate has also had experience with the Olyroos and will hope to press his claims for a spot in Graham Arnold’s squad for this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.

“Angus has shown great loyalty with many clubs showing a lot of interest in securing his services,” Jets Football Manager Joel Griffiths said.

“Angus has matured as a footballer but is yet to get anywhere near his ceiling. With so much room for growth, it’s exciting for us as a club and him as a player.

“He has all the tools he needs to be a leading midfielder in this competition.”

Thurgate and the Jets are next in action on Sunday when they travel to Dolphin Stadium to take on Brisbane Roar.
