Signing news: Vujica set for key role in Rudan's Western United

Young defender Ivan Vujica is primed for a key role in Western United’s maiden Hyundai A-League season, according to coach Mark Rudan.

Vujica, 22, became the competition newcomers’ latest signing on Monday morning after parting ways with Newcastle Jets last week.

The talented fullback – who has represented both Australia and Croatia at youth level – played 48 times for the Jets but left in search of guaranteed game time.

It appears he'll get exactly that under Rudan in Western United's inaugural campaign.

“Ivan is an integral element for our defence,” Rudan said of his latest signing.

“He is a pure left footer, and has great quality and athleticism that we were looking for. He’ll certainly strengthen the left side of our playing system.

“Ivan is also a quality young man off the pitch. I’ve monitored him over many years and have been nothing but impressed with his skill and values. As soon as the club became aware he was available, we went out for him. I’m delighted we have managed to secure him."

Vujica said: “Western United is an exciting prospect for me and it is especially humbling signing with the club’s first ever team.

“I am honoured the coaching staff have faith in me to run out on the field next to such a high calibre of Western United players.”
