Signing news: Scottish defender joins Fowler's Roar

Robbie Fowler has bolstered his Brisbane Roar defence with the capture of centre back Tom Aldred.

Previously with English Football League club Bury, 28-year-old Aldred arrives in Queensland after two loan spells and 62 appearances for Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.

It is the first time the defender – who has been capped by Scotland at U19 level and began his career at Carlisle United in 2008 – will play for a club outside of the United Kingdom.

Aldred has been on the books of clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two, including Watford and Blackpool, with whom he won the League Two play-offs in 2017.

“I’m buzzing about getting started at Brisbane Roar, it’s a massive opportunity for me,” Aldred told the club’s official website.

“I’ve always kept an eye on overseas leagues and it’s been an ambition of mine to play abroad one day.

"I met with Robbie and he put in light what he is trying to do and it was something that really attracted me.

“It’s a very competitive league that has featured some quality players and it's one that I’m really looking forward to testing myself in.”

Aldred is Fowler’s second signing for Brisbane, the Roar coach having acquired the services of Irish striker Roy O’Donovan on Monday.
