Signing news: Roar secure young English defender

On a huge day for Brisbane Roar, the club have confirmed the addition of young English centre-back Macaulay Gillesphey.

Having confirmed the signings of Scottish defender Tom Aldred and Welsh attacker Aaron Amadi-Holloway earlier on Tuesday, 23-year-old Gillesphey has also inked a deal with the club.

The 23-year-old, a towering defender, heads to the Hyundai A-League after he was released by League One side Carlisle United in May.

“I fancied doing something different, as soon as my agent mentioned it I was definitely up for it so I thought I’d give it a go,” Gillesphey told Roar’s official website.

“The facilities here [at the Club’s City of Logan Training Facility] look top-notch and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Gillesphey, who has agreed to a long-term deal with the Roar, spent three seasons with Carlisle, with the first two of them on loan from Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

He also spent his youth career with Newcastle.

“I have seen quite a bit of the [Hyundai] A-League and I’ve done my research on the club as well,” said Gillesphey, who added the chance to work under new boss Robbie Fowler was too good to turn down.

“I’ll be doing everything I can to help add some more silverware.”

Roar’s triple signings on Tuesday takes Fowler’s new additions to four after the acquisition of Irish striker Roy O’Donovan on Monday.

All four are set to start training with the club when pre-season officially gets underway next week.
