Signing news: Phoenix secure Young Socceroos defender Scott

Ufuk Talay has made his second signing as coach of Wellington Phoenix, bringing in Young Socceroos defender Walter Scott.

The 19-year-old joins the club after his release from Perth Glory at the end of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 Season.

Talay has worked with Scott before with the Young Socceroos, where he made three appearances at last year’s AFC U-19 Championship in Indonesia.

"I have brought in the young full-back to provide depth in the squad as he can play multiple positions across the backline,” Talay told Phoenix’s official website.

"Walter is a very talented young player with great potential that I’ve worked with in the Young Socceroos.

"I believe he has a great attitude and mentality and his style suits the way I want to play this season."

Scott, who was born in Bowral, joined Glory as part of their youth team in 2015.

He made his Hyundai A-League debut in the 2017/18 Season, making three appearances in total under Kenny Lowe.

But unable to break into the first-team under Tony Popovic, the versatile defender has opted for a fresh start across the ditch.

"Coming to Wellington really excites me as I aim to fight for that starting place every week,” Scott said.

"Working under Ufuk in the Young Socceroos setup was a real privilege as he’s the type of coach who gives clear direction, instilling a real confidence in his players.

"A really positive mindset is something I have always believed in as it drives success on and off the pitch.

"Last year was an excellent season for me being in such a professional environment at Perth but I believe playing time is a priority for me.

"I have only visited Wellington once and it looked picturesque so I’m looking forward to travelling to my new home and I can’t wait to get started."

Scott is the second new addition to the Phoenix squad this week, joining New Zealand All Whites goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic who was unveiled by the club on Thursday.
