Signing news: Newcastle's front-foot style suits me, says Appiah

Newcastle Jets signing Kwabena Appiah says Ernie Merrick's high-octane style of football will suit him down to the ground.

The experience Hyundai A-League attacker has joined the Jets until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season after penning a short-term deal.

Appiah, 26, had been a free agent after departing K-League outfit Incheon United in January.

“I’ve been training here for a few weeks now and I’m happy to have signed on with the Jets,” Appiah told the club's official website.

“Ernie has the boys playing a nice style of football, based around moving the ball quickly and getting forward, and I think it’s a style I’m suited to.

“I’m glad to be back in Australia and am keen to put my best foot forward as the side pushes for a spot in the finals.”

Kwabena Appiah

Appiah has featured for Wellington Phoenix, Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers - for whom he started in the club's 2014 AFC Champions League Final victory - during his Hyundai A-League career.

The Auckland-born flyer also played under Jets boss Merrick at the Phoenix.

“Kwabena is a good signing for us and we’re happy to have him on board for the remainder of the season,” Merrick told the club's official website.

“He’s got great speed and the ability to get in behind defences, which is something I look for in players who operate in the final third.

“His signing will provide us with some depth given the injury to Jason [Hoffman].”
