Sam Papasavas OAM

Born in Cyprus in 1941, Sam Papasavas came to Australia and quickly became involved in the soccer community. In 1972 he became president of South Melbourne, a position he held until his death in 1993. During his career he was president of the Victorian Soccer Federation, Australian Soccer Federation Commissioner and chairman of the National Soccer League which he helped to create. His contribution to the sport has been recognised by the introduction of the Sam Papasavas Medal for the Best and Fairest Under-21 Player in the National Soccer League.
