The AFC Annual Awards Doha 2022 saw Sam Kerr pick up another accolade for the trophy cabinet, being named the AFC Women’s Player of the Year for the second time.
After a four-year hiatus from presenting the continental awards in the AFC, the awards have made a return and were presented in Qatar overnight.
Kerr was voted the AFC Women’s Player of the Year, an award which fellow Australians Kate Gill, Caitlin Foord and Katrina Gorry have previously claimed, with Kerr last picking up the award in the 2018 edition of the award.
The award win comes less than 24 hours after the striker placed 2nd at the Ballon d'Or awards, her best-ever finish for the prestigious award after previously recording finishes of 3rd (2021 & 2022), 5th (2018) and 7th (2019) in the award which recognises the world's best female footballer.
The AFC Women’s Player of the Year saw Kerr named to a three-player shortlist at the start of October, alongside China's Zhang Linyan and the last winner of the award in 2019, Japan's Saki Kumagai.
Kerr, unable to attend the awards in Qatar, sent a message of thanks to attendees of the award night, thanking her teammates, her coaches and her family and friends.
"I just want to say what an honour it is to win this award, especially up against some amazing finalists," she said in her acceptance speech.
"It's been an amazing year for me and my team, and I just want to thank my teammates, my coaches and my family and friends, it's been an amazing year."
