Ray Baartz

An outstanding Newcastle junior, Ray Baartz was sent to Manchester United in 1963 on a sporting scolarship. He stayed for two and a half years, during which time he was offered a professional contract. Baartz returned to Australia in 1967 and joined Sydney club Hakoah where he stayed until his retirement. Baartz’s seven-year international career included 59 national appearances and 21 goals. His playing days came to a sudden end in 1974 after a blow from a Uruguayan player ruptured an artery and caused temporary paralysis.
