NPL Queensland Women's Round 10 Preview

The second third of the 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s season gets underway with this weekend’s Round 10 action.

Every side has now played each other once with the league table beginning to take shape ahead of a crucial period for sides right across the board.

On Saturday evening Peninsula Power host QAS at AJ Kelly Park while Gold Coast United travel to face Capalaba at Max Haynes Field.

Newly promoted Power have enjoyed a strong start to life in Queensland’s top tier, sitting third after nine matches with Bonnie Davies and Sara D’Appolonia starring for the outfit from AJ Kelly Park.

Mick Gallo’s side come up against a QAS side who sit seventh and have won just once this season but will feel they should sit higher had they been able to convert a few more of their league high four draws into wins, including a 2-2 opening day draw with Power.

Gold Coast United will aim to snap a four-match winless run in the league when they face Capalaba at Max Haynes Field on Saturday night.

United looked set to genuinely challenge perennial Premiers Lions following a strong start to the new campaign but now find themselves sitting fourth, seven points shy of the league leaders.

United prevailed 3-1 against Capalaba thanks to goals from Astia Neckebroeck, Charlie Farmer and Kiri Dale when the sides met in Round One.

On Sunday, league leaders Lions face Mitchelton at Teralba Park in a clash that pits the leagues two top scorers against one another.

Mitchelton’s Kallie Peurifoy leads the league with eleven goals to her name so far but sitting just a goal back is Lions stalwart Tegan Riding on ten.

The pair traded goals before Rebecca Kirkup popped up with the winner in a 2-1 triumph for Lions when the sides met at Luxury Paints Stadium on opening day.

Second placed Eastern Suburbs, who trail Lions by four points will aim to keep pressure on the league leaders with a win against last-placed Olympic at Meakin Park on Sunday evening.

Easts have won four on the bounce ahead of Sunday’s match against an Olympic side who’s fortunes went from bad to worse when they were knocked out of the Kappa Women’s Super Cup by FQPL 3 side Gold Coast Knights last week.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers, who currently occupy the other relegation position host Souths United at Ballinger Park on Sunday evening.

The Wanderers picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Olympic in their last outing to leave themselves just three points shy of sixth placed Souths in a congested bottom half of the table.

The sides traded goals through Tiffany Scarff and Dominique Spampinato in the reverse fixture at Wakerley Park in Round One.
