Newcastle Jets re-sign American goalkeeper

Newcastle Jets have announced the re-signing of American goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom ahead of the Westfield W-League 2018/19 season.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper arrived in the Hunter last year and held the number one jersey all year as the Jets made a run to the Semi Finals.

Speaking upon her arrival, Eckerstrom said she was looking forward to more of the same.

“It’s fantastic to be back in Newcastle, I really enjoyed my time here last season and I’m excited for this year,” Eckerstrom said.

Having spent time at NWSL side Portland Thorns in the Westfield W-League off-season, the American cited the upcoming campaign as crucial to her development.

“Working with [goalkeeping coach Andrew] Goldy last season helped me improve my game, and I really saw the benefits of being here in Australia during the NWSL off-season,” she said.

“We made the Semi Final last season, and we're all going to be working hard to have another successful season."

With the Jets squad now confirmed, coach Craig Deans said Eckerstrom was the final piece of the puzzle.

“It’s fantastic to have Britt back on board for the upcoming season,” Deans said.

“She’s a real competitor, a quality player and she has a really positive impact on the entire squad. Britt will help keep things organised at the back and give us good foundations to build on.

“To have everyone in Newcastle and on the training pitch together with a little under a month to go before the season kicks off is great, and now the girls are just itching to get out there.”

Newcastle open their Westfield W-League 2018/19 season with a trip to Melbourne to face Victory on Thursday, 1 November.
