Matildas Abroad: Silverware in Sweden, Cup action in England

It’s another big weekend for the Westfield Matildas abroad.

There’s already been silverware sealed in Sweden while the Fifth Round of the FA Cup gets underway in England. Here’s a wrap of all the action!

England

It will be the same opponents for Mackenzie Arnold and West Ham as the final round of the league when they take on Manchester City. Arnold was in fine form, saving two penalties and producing plenty of other great stops. Emily van Egmond didn’t play last week due to a knock.

Arsenal play hosts to Championship side Crystal Palace. All three Aussies at Arsenal saw minutes against Aston Villa in the league last week, with Lydia Williams keeping a clean sheet and Steph Catley playing a whole half as she returns from injury.

It’ll be Hayley Raso’s Everton coming up against Sam Kerr’s Chelsea next Friday to accommodate the latter’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final this weekend.


Everton made it all the way to the final of the last edition of the FA Cup and will be looking to go one better. Chelsea meanwhile will want to stay alive in the competition to continue their quest of bagging all the trophies available to them.

Alanna Kennedy’s Tottenham take on Sheffield United but the Westfield Matilda is unlikely to take part after undergoing minor surgery.

Sweden

Dylan Holmes’ has picked up silverware with BK Häcken after the team won the Svenska Cup final. They defeated Eskilstuna 3-0 with Holmes’ starting as part of a back three.


In Damallsvenskan, Emily Gielnik scored her second goal of the season as Vittsjö defeated AIK 4-0. Fellow Westfield Matilda Clare Polkinghorne ran out a full game in the heart of defence.

Netherlands

After defeating Den Haag 2-0, PSV will be looking for much of the same in the return fixture of the playoff rounds. Amy Harrison’s side sit in second behind FC Twente.

Rest of the World

Sevilla and Aivi Luik take on Madrid CFF as Liga Iberdrola heads into its final five rounds. In Iceland, Emma Checker and Selfoss were 2-0 winners over Þór/KA.

Racing Louisville and Kansas City kick off the new NWSL season with Chloe Logarzo’s Kansas side looking to start the campaign off with a win.

In the penultimate round of Serie A Femminile, Alex Huynh’s Napoli face fellow strugglers Hellas Verona.

Over in Denmark, Indiah-Paige Riley’s Fortuna Hjørring drew 1-1 with HB Køge. It will be a quick turnaround for the team as they then take on Brøndby this Sunday.
