Match preview: Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers

With nothing to play for for either side, this game typifies the sense of disappointment both the Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers would be feeling ahead of their Saturday night clash.

Newcastle were always in with a chance of making the Westfield W-League top four but never put themselves in a favourable position, nor did they produce enough back-to-back wins to mount a serious campaign.

Their only consecutive wins came in Rounds 2 and 3, where 1-0 victories over Canberra United and the Wanderers appeared to show positive signs.

However, six losses in 11 games proved to be Newcastle’s downfall, effectively forcing them to play for only a maximum of 18 points.

Worse still, Westfield Matildas star Larissa Crummer suffered a broken tibia in Round 13, meaning she may be out for the start of the 2019/20 Season.

For Western Sydney Wanderers, the final bell can’t come quickly enough.

Jets

Dan Barrett’s side began the campaign in woeful form, taking six games to get their first point of the season, and waiting until Round 11 for their first win.

There was a lot of fanfare surrounding the women from the west, particularly after their shrewd recruitment, however a 3-0 loss to Sydney FC in Round 1 set the tone for their campaign.

Roses have risen amongst the thorns, namely Ghana international Elizabeth Addo and 16-year-old Courtney Nevin.

This Round 14 clash will signal the end of two disappointing campaigns and perhaps ring in the start of preparations for a stronger 2019/20.
