Match Preview: CommBank Matildas v Thailand

The CommBank Matildas will complete their 2022 international calendar in Gosford as they meet Thailand in the second match of the Seven Consulting International Series on 15 November at Central Coast Stadium.   

It is a welcome return to Gosford for the women’s national team with the last time being as part of a two-match FIFA Women’s World Cup™ farewell series against New Zealand in 2011.

A two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup™ participant, Thailand are one of ten teams to have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™ inter-confederation play-offs to be held in February next year.   

Australia and Thailand last met at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ earlier this year with the CommBank Matildas continuing their undefeated streak.  

Squad News

Tony Gustavsson has named a 24-player CommBank Matildas squad to face Thailand to wrap up the year. After being injury hit last FIFA Women’s International Window, the CommBank Matildas will welcome back several players including goalkeeper Lydia Williams, midfielders Clare Wheeler, Emily van Egmond and Elise Kellond-Knight and defender Alanna Kennedy. 

“Coming together for the first time since we learned of our FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ opponents brings a different and sharper focus to the next set of games,” said Gustavsson.

“As always, in selecting the squad we've kept a close eye on their performances in club land. There are a few more players available which is great news as they come back from injury having recorded some good game time.”

Two debutants are in the squad looking to make their first appearances for Australia, with defender Matilda McNamara and goalkeeper Jada Whyman both named in the squad that will wrap up 2022 on home soil. 

Our Opponent

Australia will face their fellow AFC compatriots in Thailand to close out the year, facing the side from Asia for the second time this year. The first meeting this year was in the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup, with Australia and Thailand going head-to-head in the final group stage game, with goals to Emily Van Egmond and Sam Kerr sealing a 2-1 win. 


Head coach Miyo Okamoto has named a 23-player squad as the team prepare for their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™ inter-confederation play-offs next year.
