Lydia Williams joins Melbourne Victory

CommBank Matildas' goalkeeper Lydia Williams has signed for Melbourne Victory in the Liberty A-League on a two-year deal, returning to the Dub after stints in England and France. 

The 102-capped CommBank Matildas is set to play for her third club in the Liberty A-League, kicking off her professional career with Canberra United back in 2008 and four seasons with Melbourne City.

Williams played in Melbourne City's last Championship winning team in the 2019/20 season and joins their cross-town rivals, Melbourne Victory for the upcoming season.

Victory finished last season in fourth, the side secured a spot in the preliminary final after knocking out Melbourne City in a 4-3 dramatic penalty shootout. The side went on to taste defeat to the eventual Champions, Sydney FC, with a 1-0 defeat in the preliminary final. 

Williams becomes Victory's eighth signing of the new season, joining Jeff Hopkins' goalkeeping ranks alongside former CommBank Young Matildas Miranda Templeman. 

Williams talked about signing for Victory for the upcoming season, "I’m excited to be returning home and representing Melbourne Victory this season,” Williams said to melbournevictory.com.au.

 “After such an exciting period for our sport, to be returning to the competition where I started my career and had so many great memories is an honour for me but I also want to continue making great memories with the team and the Club.”

Melbourne Victory head coach Jeff Hopkins talked about the signing “We’re thrilled to have a goalkeeper of Lydia’s calibre in the squad for the upcoming campaign,” Hopkins said.

Melbourne Victory will kick off their Liberty A-League season against Brisbane Roar on Sunday the 15th of October at 4pm AEDT at the Home of the Matildas, tune in for free in Australia on 10Play or via Paramount+.
