Bautheac rescues Roar in four-goal draw with wasteful Jets

Eric Bautheac's 87th-minute header helped Brisbane Roar avoid a club-record sixth straight defeat as they twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Newcastle Jets.

Roy O'Donovan looked to have given hosts Newcastle a seventh win in eight meetings with Roar when he poked home just two minutes after Adam Taggart had erased Dimitri Petratos' first-half opener.

But the Queenslanders regrouped and made Ernie Merrick's men pay for a succession of missed chances, Bautheac's third Hyundai A-League goal giving Roar their first point since a 2-0 victory over Melbourne City on November 24.

Newcastle slipped to a disappointing late loss against Adelaide United on Sunday but their mood was lifted inside six minutes at McDonald Jones Stadium with Petratos picking off Jacob Pepper's poor pass, dancing around three challenges and applying a cool finish.

The playmaker then teed up Ronny Vargas for what seemed certain to be a second, but Jamie Young did well to block the Venezuelan's deflected finish.

Petratos was the architect of everything positive the Jets produced going forward in the first half and he deserved a second with a brilliant free-kick that came back off the post in the 33rd minute.

Young next produced a superb reaction save to deny Jason Hoffman at close range and the home side were briefly made to rue their profligacy after the interval.

Connor O'Toole skilfully turned inside the box before squaring for Taggart to tap in the equaliser, although battling Brisbane were immediately forced onto the back foot as O'Donovan scrambled home from a free-kick moments later.

Matt McKay turned a tough chance against the base of the post as Brisbane, playing under caretaker coach Darren Davies, sought a response, while Irish striker O'Donovan fluffed a presentable opportunity to make the points safe.

In the end the Jets were left frustrated for the second straight match as substitute Nick D'Agostino floated a cross to the far post for Bautheac to nod Roar to a welcome result.
