Kurz admits lack of cutting edge cost Victory in Melbourne Derby

Marco Kurz admits his Melbourne Victory side needed to show more killer instinct to take three points from his first Melbourne Derby as coach.

Burundi international Elvis Kamsoba came closest to giving Kurz a dream debut in the Victory dugout but his 58th-minute strike was chalked out for offside.

Andrew Nabbout had threatened on his Victory return while Storm Roux fired narrowly over as a closely-fought first-half remained locked at 0-0.

Lawrence Thomas made late saves from City debutant Craig Noone and youngster Connor Metcalfe before frustrations boiled over as the stalemate drew to a close.

“I think our performance was not better than City’s, that means a draw was the fair result,” Kurz said.

“You saw two teams playing out of a good structure. Nobody wants to risk too much. City are always really good in the defence.

“We had a couple of good moments on the outside positions but our crossing and final passes were not clear enough to create chances.

“There was a point at half-time to make it better. To have clearer actions and to have more killer instinct in the finishing or crossing.”

Kurz releaved new recruit Tim Hoogland went down injured with the final kick of the last training session ahead of Saturday’s game and will have a scan to determine the extent of the problem.

“The injury is very disappointing for all of us, but mostly for Tim,” Kurz said.

“We will see how long he is out - I cannot say time - but it was not good enough to be part of the game.”
