Key grand final match-ups

We take a look at the battles that matter for the Hyundai A-League Grand Final.

There is no love lost between Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory, last time the two sides met Henrique and Jacob Burns got into each other, while Danny Vukovic and Mitch Nichols also exchanged pleasantries in the heat of battle.

It-s hardly surprising these two physical and proud sides are at odds, but put those feelings aside and there are going to be some key battles which decide this grand final.

We take a look at those here.

Josh Risdon v Thomas Broich

There is little doubting that young Glory defender Risdon has come a long way in his first full season of Hyundai A-League action, but he will face his ultimate test in the grand final.

Risdon, who was a candidate for the NAB Young Player of the Year will get the job on Johnny Warren Medallist, Thomas Broich, arguably the toughest job in the A-League.

The big question is how will he handle it on the big occasion?

Broich has plenty of skill with the ball at his feet, his trickery and an ability to deliver a fine ball his calling cards, Risdon though has the enthusiasm and pace of youth and it might be a pace Broich cannot match.

Known for his forays down the right side, Risdon can be an attacking right back, but if Perth turn over possession and he is up the pitch, Brisbane and specifically Broich can punish him.

Mohamed Adnan v Billy Mehmet

While Broich and Risdon will be providing plenty of delivery to their forward players, the aerial battle between Mohamed Adnan and Billy Mehmet will also be vital.

Mehmet has been in superb form in recent weeks and has been a major reason why Perth have gone this far in the finals. He set up Shane Smeltz for Perth-s goal against the Mariners and scored the vital leveller against Wellington himself in a dominant performance.

While he has the ability to control the ball on the deck and a poacher-s instinct in front of goal, he is also their key target man.

Both players are known for their ability to nod in a goal and both are renowned for their clearing headers, especially with both going back or forward as the case may be for set pieces. The winner of this battle could decide the game.

Besart Berisha & Mitch Nichols v Danny Vukovic

All three men are intense characters on the pitch, all three have been known to lose their heads, but the biggest battle will be how Vukovic handles a tandem who have put six goals past him in three matches.

He needs to sort his defence out and make sure they pick up the scraps that both Berisha and Nichos love to pounce on, because if Perth don-t mark them tightly it could be curtains pretty quickly.

Vukovic does have the most clean sheets in the competition this season but he has conceded 10 goals against the Roar, that needs to change.

As for Berisha and Nichols, neither needs to get into a war of words with the Perth keeper, last time out Nichols did and it likely wasn-t a battle he was going to win.

Andrezinho v injury

The Brazilian is usually ripe for one really good delivery to Smeltz and Mehmet per game and lately it has been more.

He has been busy around the box, twisting and turning defenders inside out at regular intervals, but he limped off against Central Coast with a groin injury and things didn-t look good.

While his status and the severity of the injury are still unclear he failed to train at their first session since their penalty shootout win over Central Coast and is under a massive cloud.

Perth need him out there for his pace and guile, but at what cost?
