Kerr confident Westfield Matildas will be ‘flying’ in time for Olympic qualifiers
Sam Kerr says the two-game series with Chile was just what the Westfield Matildas needed and predicts her side will be “flying” in time for February’s Olympic Games qualifiers.
The Westfield Matildas completed a clean sweep of the Chileans with a hard-fought 1-0 win in front of more than 10,000 fans in Adelaide on Tuesday night.
Emily Gielnik scored the only goal of the match midway through the first-half as she finished off after an incisive through-ball from Kerr.
Despite creating more chances in both halves, the Australian’s weren’t as clinical as they could be ensuring the match went down to the wire.
“It’s our first camp back so there’s always going to be a few cobwebs,” Kerr told Fox Sports.
“The girls are just getting back together and come January we’ll be flying.
“We’re happy with the two wins and the clean sheet most important.”
After her match-winning double at Bankwest Stadium on Saturday, Kerr was hoping to continue her rich vein of form in her first international in the City of Churches.
And she had a great chance to double Australia’s lead in first-half stoppage-time when she won a penalty, only to be denied by an excellent stop by Chilean keeper Natalia Campos.
Kerr didn’t let the miss get her down, rattling the crossbar with a sensational strike just minutes into the second half.
“You have to pick yourself back up,” she said.
“We had to win the game…it was an important win for us and a good starting point.
“You can’t dwell on things, that’s football, it happens but it’s something I have to practice.”
This was the Westfield Matildas’ first match in South Australia since 2006, with 10,340 fans not missing the opportunity to see Ante Milicic’s side in action.
The impressive crowd on Tuesday night followed on from Saturday’s record-breaking attendance of 20,029 in Sydney.
“It’s nice to come to Adelaide and give them a game. The support was amazing,” Kerr said.
“We’re so lucky, we’ve been supported all over Australia. The girls deserve it and we’re grateful for all the support.”
