It is certainly a show of commitment from the German club to its co-captain, who has registered four goals and four assists in 42 appearances since joining in July 2021.

Speaking on signing a new extension, the former Hull City and Hibernian man told the club's official website: "It means a lot to me that St. Pauli see me as part of their future because I feel very much at home at the club and in the city.

"It's a great honour and I'm very proud to be able to lead the team as one of the captains after such a short time.

"I look forward to working on our development and collective success in the years to come."

St. Pauli Head Coach Timo Schultz was delighted to have extended the 29-year-old's services.

"The fact that Jackson is already captaining the team after just one season underlines his importance for us," he said.

"With his will to win, he embodies traditional St. Pauli qualities and is an outstanding representative of the club both on and off the pitch. To have him in the squad in the years to come is a great signal."

Director of Sport Andreas Bornemann added: "Jackson has repeatedly proved his value for the team and the club and quickly grown into a leader and figure of identification.

"I think both parties appreciate what they have in each other."

Irvine and St. Pauli take on cross-city rivals and league leaders Hamburger SV in the derby on Saturday morning at 2.30am AEDT.
