Flashback: Socceroos' remarkable triumph over Canada in 1993 FIFA World Cup qualifier

The 1993 World Cup qualifier against Canada will remain a favourite for Socceroos fans as the tense eight-goal thriller ensured Australia's passage to the penultimate stage of qualification.

After a disappointing defeat to Canada the month prior, the Socceroos had the home advantage in August 1993 at Sydney Football Stadium ready to make the ultimate comeback.

Needing a 2-0 win to progress to the knockout stage, the Socceroos had a slow start to the match.

Aurelio Vidmar, Graham Arnold and Frank Farina made great strides in the opening minutes of the first half but struggled to turn their opportunities in front of the net into goals.

Eddie Thomson's squad did not let their missed chances dent their confidence as they took the initiative just before halftime.

Farina lobbed an overhead bicycle kick, rocketing the ball into the left of the net leaving Canadian keeper Craig Forrest stunned.

Canada quickly equalised in the opening minutes of the second half after midfielder Lyndon Hooper got one passed Socceroos keeper Mark Schwarzer.

With only 15 minutes left of the match and tensions rising for Socceroos fans, Australia found their next opportunity with Mehmet Durakovic.

Aurelio Vidmar played a long ball for Durakovic to hurl it over Forrest into the goal.

With both teams equal on aggregate points after full time an additional 30 minutes did not give way to a winner. The match was to be decided on penalties.

Paul Wade was first for the Socceroos and effortlessly sent Forrest the wrong way giving Australia their first goal. Dale Mitchell was first up for Canada, and it was almost a carbon copy of Wade's goal.

Alex Tobin took the next penalty for Australia and blasted the ball to the right of Forrest.

Alex Bunbury and Mike Sweeney tried their best in front of Mark Schwarzer, but he heroically collected both opportunities.

Farina was up next and wasted no time in shooting the ball into the roof of the net to send the Socceroos to their last qualifying match against Argentina.
