SYDNEY DERBY

Sydney Derby

Two new coaches will be dropped into the white-hot atmosphere of one of the fiercest rivalries in Australian sport next season with Steve Corica and Markus Babbel taking over at Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers respectively.

Babbel will hope to reverse a record which has seen Wanderers win four and lose nine of the 18 meetings between the pair.

Two of those losses came last season, although Western Sydney did manage a 2-2 draw in the first installment of the trilogy.

MELBOURNE DERBY

Melbourne Derby

The competition’s first intra-city derby is back for its ninth season with reigning champions Melbourne Victory aiming to extend their recent run of dominance.

Kevin Muscat’s men triumphed in the final two meetings last term – one courtesy of a 95th-minute penalty – and have won four of the past five.

Melbourne City did, however, win the first in both 2016/17 and 2017/18, and with no draws between the pair since February 2016, fireworks are to be expected from the outset.

F3 DERBY

F3 Derby

Three comprehensive victories over their nearest rivals and a stunning run to the Grand Final in a superb 2017/18 campaign have given Newcastle Jets domain over the F3 Derby.

Mike Mulvey has since been tasked with lifting the spirits at Central Coast Mariners, who last season alone suffered the two biggest defeats in this fixture’s history.

Getting one back on the Jets at the first opportunity is a good place to start.

ORIGINAL RIVALRY

Original Rivalry

The Original Rivalry hasn’t lost any of its lustre.

Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United have been battling out blockbusters since the Hyundai A-League was born and their rollercoaster Elimination Final clash of last season showed how much life remains in this fixture.

Victory have undoubtedly enjoyed the best of it, winning 24 of the 46 clashes.

BIG BLUE

Big Blue

Both teams have more obvious rivalries in terms of geographical proximity but none steeped in as much history.

Ill feeling and the pursuit of higher honours have always made the Big Blue a heated affair, none more so when Victory avenged their 2017 Grand Final loss by dumping the Sky Blues out of last season’s Finals Series.

Expect plenty of drama when this pair goes head-to-head.
