Emily Gielnik signs for Bayern Munich

Westfield Matildas forward Emily Gielnik is off to Europe after signing with Frauen-Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich.

Gielnik, 27, joins the German club after winning the Westfield W-League Premiership with Melbourne Victory, as well as appearing for the Matildas at the FIFA Women's World Cup in France.

"I'm excited. It is the dream of every footballer to play for a top club like Bayern Munich," said Gielnik, who will wear the No.15 at Bayern.

"As a striker, I now want to score as many goals as I can for my new club.

"I want to win the Bundesliga and the Champions League with this great team.

"These are big goals, I know, but that's exactly what I'm going to fight for and give everything."

Bayern head coach Jens Scheuer said: "We are happy that Emily has decided to play for Bayern."

“She has a good physique and speed and can play in the offensive area on all positions. This type of player was missing us in the squad.

“We've been watching Emily for a while. At the 2019 World Cup, she once again came to the fore with the Australian national team, so we wanted to make a commitment after the opportunity arose.”

The Frauen-Bundesliga kicked off over the weekend, with Bayern Munich - who were crowned champions in 2015 and 2016 - opening the season with a 3-1 win away to Freiburg.

Their next game is on Friday, August 23 (Saturday AEST) against FFC Frankfurt.
