Simon expects Mariners to be back to their best against City for his 200th game

Matt Simon believes the Central Coast Mariners will continue to thrive against the ‘big teams’ as the veteran forward prepares to pull on the Yellow and Navy jersey for the 200th time in the A-League against Melbourne City.

Simon lifted the Premiers Plate in his second season as a senior in Gosford, in 2007/08,  and the 35-year-old has racked up 199 competition games during three spells, either side of moves to K-League club Jeonnam Dragons and Sydney FC, ahead of his milestone game at Central Coast Stadium on Wednesday.

Alen Stajcic's side have shocked the A-League this season, going from wooden spoon holders in 2019/20 to competition frontrunners after winning three of their opening five games, including away wins over newcomers Macarthur FC and the defending Premiers and Champions, Sydney FC.

The Mariners slipped off the top of the ladder following a 2-1 home loss against Wellington Phoenix on Sunday and, having played three games in the space of 12 days, Mariners captain Simon had barely had a moment to reflect on his career in the Central Coast before he celebrates his latest accomplishment.

“It feels good. I haven't had much time to think about it,” the club's all-time record goalscorer said.

“It's come up pretty quick this year with all the short turnarounds.

“Obviously looking ahead, I'll really looking forward to playing my 200th game in front of family and friends.”

HIGHLIGHTS: Sydney FC 0-2 Melbourne City

Wednesday's opponents Melbourne City have won two and lost two games this season and fell 3-1 to Perth Glory on Sunday after creating an abundance of chances without punishing the Western Australians.

Simon acknowledges City are one of the A-League 'big clubs' but the former East Gosford junior has faith that the Mariners will keep raising their game against the competition's strongest sides.

“Melbourne City are a big club but I think that's when we thrive. We're at our best when we play the big teams,” Simon added.

“The boys are really looking forward to the game and we want to get the three points considering that we dropped those points in the last game.”
