CommBank Matildas & Sam Kerr win accolades at Marie Claire's 2023 Women of the Year Awards

The annual Marie Claire's 2023 Women of the Year Awards took place in Sydney last night, with the CommBank Matildas winning the award for the Champions of the Year while Sam Kerr picked up the award for Icon of the Year.

The team were named 'Champion of the Year' for 2023, beating the Diamonds, Indi Cooper and Meg Lanning for the award. Our best-ever finish at the FIFA Women's World Cup on home soil saw the team reach incredible heights on and off the pitch. Charli Grant, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams were on hand to accept the award on behalf of the team.

Representing The Matildas for Marie Claire’s Women Of The Year Awards, on the cover of the latest edition, Mary Fowler reflects on what her team achieved: “It’s hard to put into words the legacy we’ve left behind. I think it’s really special that we can get recognised as a team for the work we did and the journey we’ve had together.”

Sam Kerr also picked up an award on the night, named the 'Icon of the Year' for 2023, beating Australian journalist and author, Leigh Sales, actress Cate Blanchett and singer and TV personality, Marcia Hines.

“Playing to packed stadiums around the country, in front of family and friends, while having the whole country support and get behind us was the highlight of 2023 for me,” Kerr tells Marie Claire Australia.

“It was a surreal time and something I will remember for the rest of my life.”

The night also saw Marie Claire's newest cover revealed, with Mary Fowler featured on the cover.
