Caltex Socceroo Souttar awarded second goal against Nepal

Harry Souttar can add yet another goal to his freakish tally for the Caltex Socceroos.

The official match report from Souttar’s debut game for the national side against Nepal revealed a second goal – originally marked down as an own goal – has been awarded to the 20-year-old.

It means Souttar’s scoring record for the Caltex Socceroos moves to four goals in two games, an impressive record for the centre-back who had scored just three goals in his previous five seasons of football.

The 198cm defender has proven an incredibly effective threat for Graham Arnold’s side from set pieces with all four of his goals against Nepal and Chinese Taipei coming from dead ball situations.

And it’s a trait being exploited at Souttar’s club Fleetwood Town in English League One by manager Joey Barton.

On loan from Stoke City Souttar also scored on debut for Fleetwood Town earlier this season, and Barton spoke after that opening day game about the threat the Aussie giant posed in the air.

“We’ve worked on getting some new moving patterns for him from corners, because he’s so good in the air,” Barton said post-match.

“Credit must go to the staff and everyone at the club for that, especially the statistic department who highlight these areas during the week.

“It’s pleasing to come off the pitch and their work has been rewarded."

Souttar’s whirlwind week of international football earned him a place in FIFA 20’s Team of the Week, a feature of the game’s popular ‘Ultimate Team’ mode which offers weekly upgrades to a select group of players around the world who perform above their usual standards.

Souttar’s 71-rated card will be popular amongst Australian FIFA players keen to test out the skillset of their new national star.

The Caltex Socceroos next convene for a World Cup Qualifier against Jordan on November 14, and barring injury Souttar’s stellar form in his first two games for the national side should warrant him automatic selection in Graham Arnold’s squad for the tie.

With a month between games in the green and gold, Souttar will now return to England where he will hope his current vein of goal scoring form continues for club side Fleetwood Town.
