Brosque praises ‘beautiful’ fans after Sky Blues farewell skipper

Retiring Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque has praised fans after being farewelled during Thursday night’s clash against Perth Glory.

Brosque announced his retirement from football earlier in the week after a club record 82 goals in another club record 264 games for the club.

While not fit enough to run out for the Sky Blues against Glory in their 1-0 win at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Brosque was still able to partake in celebrations as the club honoured their captain.

Speaking exclusively to a-league.com.au, Brosque said he was honoured by the tributes.

“It’s a nice feeling to come out and know that you mean so much to these people and these fans,” he said.

“From day one when I first got to the club the support through good times, bad times, good form, poor form.

“They’ve always been good for me and to see them come out and do that tonight is really heartwarming, it’s beautiful.

“There’s been so many nice things people have said to me and written to me, all of that is very overwhelming but to have it tonight and end it this way is good.

“We’ve still got a lot to finish off in the season but tonight is very special.”

An Adam Le Fondre strike in the 37th minute proved the difference on the night and Brosque took time to praise the performance and urge his teammates to keep going as they look to claim more Hyundai A-League silverware.

“We’ve shown it already this year when we beat them over there, tonight they rested a lot of players after wrapping up the Premiership but we still had to come out here and do a job and the boys did it fantastically,” Brosque said.

“They played a very disciplined game plan, they tried to frustrate us and play five at the back with the three boys sitting and tried to get us on the counter, we didn't allow that to happen.

“The unfortunate part of it is not being out there with the boys. To get the win the way they did and go five points clear [of third place] is a big deal for us going into the last game.

“We want to have that buffer on Melbourne, put the pressure on them and try and sew up that second spot.”
