Brenton Speed tears up over Martin Tyler’s praise of scorpion kick goal commentary

It’s the type of goal that can either be a commentator’s dream or nightmare.

Riley McGree’s sensational scorpion kick goal against Melbourne City in last season’s Hyundai A-League Semi-Final was a strike that could have stunned even the most eloquent into silence.

That was not the case with Brenton Speed – and his call of McGree’s strike will live long in the memory.

So excellent was Speed’s call of the goal that he has earned praise from one of profession's finest in Martin Tyler, who is a personal hero of the Fox Sports commentator.

“I thought the commentary was excellent,” Tyler remarked.

“That’s going to be shown forever.

“A commentator’s nightmare is to have something that you don’t match up to and he certainly matched up to it.”

Tyler's stately and regal narrations are instantly recognisable for football fans around the world.

He holds special reverence in Australia, where he has accompanied countless late nights and early mornings for Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup matches.

The Englishman is held in particularly fond regard by Speed, whom he says has been a constant source of inspiration throughout his commentary career.

“I think Martin Tyler is the doyen of football commentary. He’s been doing it forever and hardly misses a beat,” he said.

“He’s fantastic, the way he lets the game breathe but then when the big moment arrives he’s ready to go.

“You think of the Aguero goal to win the Premier League with Manchester City. There’s blokes who have tattooed that commentary on themselves so good was it – the only ‘Os’ you put in the Aguero is the only thing you have to work out, so good was Martin Tyler’s commentary on that.”
