The best of the shot-stoppers contending for Goalkeeper of the Year

There are a number of glovemen in contention to be named 2019/20 Goalkeeper of the Season, a title which will be awarded at the Hyundai A-League's edition of the Dolan Warren Awards on Thursday night. 

Of all the custodians league-wide, eight stand out as potential recipients of the award after putting together individually outstanding bodies of work throughout the 2019/20 campaign.

But who will take out the award on Thursday evening?

Read on for a comprehensive look at those in contention and decide for yourself which gloveman has been the best of the 2019/20 Hyundai A-League campaign.

Andrew Redmayne - Sydney FC

Andrew Redmayne's eight clean sheets for the regular season helped Sydney FC on their way to forging the most sturdiest defence in the Hyundai A-League.

In his 27 appearances Sydney's custodian conceded 23 goals, made 90 saves, 27 catches and 11 punches as Sydney secured the Premiership/Championship double.

Clean sheets against Perth Glory and Melbourne City in Sydney's respective Semi-Final and Grand Final clashes ensured Redmayne helped the Sky Blues on their way to securing two more pieces of silverware to add to their already hefty trophy cabinet.

Jamie Young - Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar scored the second-least amount of goals of any team in the Hyundai A-League this season, in front of only the bottom-placed Central Coast Mariners.

But what they lacked in offensive firepower they provided in defensive solidity, and with Jamie Young excelling in goals the Roar still managed to make it into the Finals Series.

Young conceded just 21 goals in his 21 appearances for the campaign, making 74 saves, 15 catches and nine punches to go with 17 clearances.

The 35-year-old's season was filled with an array of saves destined for the highlight reels as he excelled week in, week out as part of Brisbane's accomplished defensive unit.

Tom Glover -Melbourne City

It took Tom Glover until Round 18 to establish himself as Melbourne City's number one, but from that moment forth the 22-year-old proved himself as not only City's best gloveman, but one of the best and brightest goalkeeping talents league-wide.

Glover's 15 appearances garnered 50 saves as he conceded 17 goals and kept four clean sheets. 

Two of those clean sheets came after the Hyundai A-League restart in July and August, where Glover was awarded for his excellent form with a nomination for Young Footballer of the Year.

Glover kept a clean sheet for 90 minutes of the Hyundai A-League Grand Final before conceding the eventual winner to Rhyan Grant in the first half of extra time, but the young goalkeeper only enhanced his reputation with his standout performance on that day in a losing side.

Mark Birighitti - Central Coast Mariners

Of all the goalkeepers in the league, it's safe to say Mark Birighitti was the busiest in the 2019/20 campaign. 

Lining up every week in a Mariners outfit which won just five games, lost eighteen and shipped a league-high 55 goals would not have been an easy task for the 29-year-old, but Birighitti managed to impress with his shot-stopping ability.

Birighitti kept only two clean sheets for the season but made 99 saves, more than any other goalkeeper in the league. 

The Mariners ended the campaign with a dismal goal difference of -29, but their defensive frailty would have been tenfold if not for the brilliant glove-work of Birighitti in the 2019/20 season.

Stefan Marinovic - Wellington Phoenix

Former Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Filip Kurto won the 2018/19 Goalkeeper of the Season before departing for Western United.

To fill the void new boss Ufuk Talay recruited New Zealand international Stefan Marinovic, who proved a brilliant acquisition.

Marinovic kept five clean sheets including three in four games in mid-season as Wellington surged up the table.

The 28-year-old conceded 34 goals in 27 games and made 84 saves and 22 clearances as an imposing presence in Wellington's backline.

Paul Izzo - Adelaide United

Izzo experienced a similarly challenging campaign to Central Coast's Birighitti in his 25 games for the Reds in 2019/20. 

93 saves, 13 catches, 15 clearances and five punches kept Izzo extremely busy in a campaign in which he managed to keep four clean sheets despite conceding 47 goals. 

Daniel Lopar - Western Sydney Wanderers

He didn't return to action after the Hyundai A-League restart, but Daniel Lopar impressed for the Wanderers in his 20 appearances for the 2019/20 season.

Lopar produced 67 saves, 22 clearances and three clean sheets including two in seperate 1-0 Sydney Derby wins over the Sky Blues.

The Swiss goalkeeper was sensational in both games, making a total of nine saves from nine shots faced against the eventual Premiers and Champions to hand the Red and Black bragging rights over Sydney in what was an otherwise forgetful campaign.
