Babbel confirms Baumjohann's departure from Western Sydney Wanderers

Markus Babbel has revealed attacking midfielder Alexander Baumjohann will not be returning to Western Sydney Wanderers next season.

Baumjohann, 32, played his final game for the club in Saturday night's 1-0 loss to Melbourne Victory at ANZ Stadium.

Speculation has long surrounded the former Bayern Munich man's future and the player himself declined to confirm whether he was headed for the exit during a post-match interview with Fox Sports.

But when questioned by the broadcaster, head coach Babbel confirmed Baumjohann will not be part of his rebuilding efforts.

"He played his last game [for Western Sydney]," the German said of his compatriot

"I feel a bit sad for him because he's a good player.

"The good thing for me now is I understand the game in Australia. I'm experienced now and know what I need to have a good side, to have success.

"I'll bring these players in and it's up to us to show it on the pitch."

Several more Western Sydney players are coming off contract and a squad overhaul looks set to take place ahead of next season's move to the new Bankwest Stadium.

Babbel, having guided Wanderers to an underwhelming eight-placed finish in his first season in charge, is clear on the types of individuals needed to revive the ailing side's fortunes.

"Hard-working players," the ex-Liverpool defender said.

"This is what the people want to see, what we need to have success. Really hard-working players but also skilful players. We're looking for both sides."

Baumjohann netted three goals in 20 Hyundai A-League appearances this term.
