Aussies Abroad: Ryan’s heroics denies Tottenham in EPL

Caltex Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan put in a man-of-the-match display as Brighton and Hove Albion held Champions League-bound Tottenham to a draw in the Premier League on Wednesday morning (AEST).

In what could be a huge point in Brighton’s bid to avoid relegation, Ryan made a number of crucial saves as the match finished 1-1 at the AMEX Stadium.

Harry Kane gave Spurs the lead early in the second half, capitalising on a defensive error from the Seagulls, before Pascal Gross levelled things up from the penalty spot just two minutes later.

The home side had Ryan to thank for keeping things level as he had an answer for almost everything Tottenham threw at him.

His save to deny Korea’s Son Heung-min in first-half stoppage-time was particularly impressive.

While Brighton has now gone six EPL games without a win, they hold a healthy eight-point buffer to the drop zone with four games left.

But Chris Hughton’s side have a tricky run home taking on Europa League-chasing Burnley, champions Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Elsewhere, fellow Aussie gloveman Danny Vukovic also had a good night in Belgium, keeping a cleansheet in Genk’s goalless draw with Gent.

The Caltex Socceroo custodian didn’t have much to do but made a couple of important stops as Genk remain in fifth spot on the Belgium First Division A table.
