Aussies Abroad: Midweek titan clashes in Scotland & Socceroos face-off in the Championship

There was some exciting midweek action for our Aussies Abroad, and they will aim to continue their title pushes across Europe’s leagues over the weekend.

Here’s what’s coming up.

Subway Socceroos

Four Socceroos could be in action on Sunday morning at 2:00am (AEDT) when Middlesbrough host Ipswich Town in the EFL Championship.

Samuel Silvera (cap #634) will look to earn his first start for Middlesbrough since early November while Tom Glover will be the backup goalkeeper for Michael Carrick’s men.

Massimo Luongo (cap #571) and Cameron Burgess (cap #633) have been mainstays for Ipswich this season and will be eager to help the side keep pace at the top of the Championship.

Also, Harry Souttar's (cap #606) Leicester City play on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) against Plymouth Argyle.

As usual, there will be plenty of Socceroos on the field in Scotland, starting with the Premiership.

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) came on in the 76th minute of St Mirren’s 1-0 loss with St. Johnstone on Thursday morning. He should feature for St Mirren when they travel to Ross Country on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT), while Ryan Strain (cap #624) will miss the game through injury.

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game for St Johnstone. The defender should start once more on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) for St Johnstone’s clash with Motherwell.

Martin Boyle (cap #599) and Lewis Miller (cap #635) started as Hibernian lost 4-1 to Celtic, and James Jeggo (cap #601) came on in the 58th minute. They should all take the field for Hibernian against cellar dwellers Livingston on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT).

Marco Tilio (cap #616) continued his recovery against Hibernian coming in the 63rd minute for Celtic. He will look to get more minutes on Sunday at 11:00pm (AEDT) when Celtic travel to Kilmarnock.

Kye Rowles (cap #622) and Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620), as well as Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof, started in Hearts’ 1-0 defeat to Rangers. Atkinson played until halftime in his return from injury, while Rowles and Nieuwenhof got through the whole game. Those three should be in action again on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT) when Hearts take on Aberdeen.

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) should start in the centre of defence for Hamilton Academical as the side continue their Scottish League One title charge on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) against Alloa Athletic.

Milos Degenek (cap #585) played the entire second half in FK Crvena Zvezda's 5-0 Round of 16 Serbian Cup win over Radnicki Nis. He will hope to get some more minutes for the Belgrade outfit in the Serbian SuperLiga on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) against Mladost Lucani.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer was the goalkeeper for Charlton as his team went down on penalties in the EFL Trophy to Reading on Thursday. In the EFL League One, Maynard-Brewer will likely be in goal for Charlton’s clash with Cambridge United on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT).

Elsewhere in the competition, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) will look to continue his sparkling form for Blackpool on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT) against Carlisle United. Dougall was rested for Blackpool’s 2-1 win against Barnsley in the EFL Trophy on Wednesday.

Callum Elder (cap #614) didn’t play in Derby’s 3-0 win against Fleetwood in the EFL Trophy on Wednesday. The fullback will hope for further minutes on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) when Derby travel to Leyton Orient in the EFL League One.

Three Socceroos are expected to be action in the Belgian First Division A over the weekend.

Jordan Bos (cap #632)’s Westerlo face Kortrijk on Saturday at 6:45am (AEDT), while Jason Davidson (cap #545)’s Eupen host Genk on Monday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Aiden O'Neill (cap #629) played just over an hour as Standard Liege lost 2-0 to Anderlecht on Friday in the Round of 16 of the Belgium Cup. The midfielder faces a rematch on Monday at 4:30 am (AEDT) taking on Anderlecht again, but this time in the Belgium First Division A.

Mathew Ryan (cap #555) was the goalkeeper for AZ Alkmaar’s 2-1 defeat to NEC Nijmegen on Thursday morning in Eredivisie. The Socceroos captain should be in between the sticks again on Sunday at 7:00am (AEDT) for AZ’s clash with Almere City.

Garang Kuol (cap #627) remained on the bench as FC Volendam lost 3-1 to Feyenoord on Friday morning in the Eredivisie. Kuol will look for minutes when FC Volendam travel to SC Heerenveen on Sunday at 7:00am (AEDT).

Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) both started St. Pauli’s Wednesday 4-1 win over Homburg in the German DFB-Pokal. Metcalfe played an hour while Irvine got through 85 minutes. The midfield pair will likely start on Sunday at 6:30 am (AEDT) as St Pauli take on Vfl Osnabruck in the 2. Bundesliga.

Craig Goodwin (cap #562) should play in the Saudi Pro League when Al-Wehda face Al Akhdoud on Sunday at 5:00am (AEDT).

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) nearly caused an upset with Parma taking Serie A side Fiorentina all the way, going down on penalties in the Coppa Italia on Thursday morning. Circati should start for Parma, who currently sit equal top in Serie B, on Monday at 2:15am (AEDT) when they return to league action against Palermo.

Mohamed Toure (cap #636) wasn’t involved as his Paris FC won 2-0 over Rodez on Wednesday morning in Ligue 2. The exciting forward will target more minutes on Sunday as Paris go head-to-head with Valenciennes on Sunday at 5:00am (AEDT).

Jason Cummings (cap #626) played all of Mohun Bagan’s 2-2 draw with Odisha FC in the Indian Super League on Thursday.

James Holland (cap #508) will look to fight his way back into the Austria Wien team ahead of their Sk Austria Klagenfurt clash in the Austrian Bundesliga on Sunday at 3:00am (AEDT).

Denis Genreau (cap #610) could get some minutes for Toulouse in their must-win Ligue 1 match against Lyon at 3:05 am (AEDT) on Monday.

Awer Mabil (cap #597) will be eager to carry on his fine form in the Swiss Super League as Grasshopper take on Basel on Sunday at 4:00am (AEDT).

Subway Olyroos

Nicholas Bilokapic missed Peterborough United’s EFL Trophy tie with Arsenal Academy on Wednesday. However, should start again on Sunday when Peterborough host Oxford United at 2:00 am (AEDT) in the EFL League One.

Also in the competition, Cameron Peupion will seek further minutes for Cheltenham when they travel to Bristol Rovers on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

In the EFL Championship, Nectarios Triantis should be on the bench for Sunderland’s match against West Brom on Saturday at 11:30 pm (AEDT).

Louis D’Arrigo could play when Lechia Gdansk host Chrobry Glogow on Sunday at 3:30am (AEDT) in the Polish I Liga.

In EFL League Two, Jay Rich-Baghuelou should start on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT) against Walsall at home.

As mentioned, in the Scottish Premiership, Calem Nieuwenhof played a full game for Hearts in their 1-0 loss to Rangers on Thursday morning. Hearts take on Aberdeen on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT). 

In Eerste Divisie, Adrian Segecic came on in the 76th minute of FC Dordrecht’s 1-1 draw with De Graafschap on Tuesday morning. The winger should play again when FC Dordrecht take on VVV-Venlo on Saturday at 6:00 am (AEDT).

Other Aussies

Jacob Chapman will be the reserve goalkeeper for Huddersfield in the EFL Championship for the Bristol City match on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT).

Zak Gilsenan could be on the bench for Blackburn Rovers’ important Championship game against Leeds on Sunday at 11:30pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Caleb Watts could feature from the bench again when Exeter host Port Vale on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) in the EFL League One.

Jack Iredale started for Bolton in their 2-0 win over Port Vale on Tuesday morning in the EFL Trophy.

Dean Bouzanis will hope to start in goal again when Sutton United host Harrogate Town on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) in EFL League Two.

John Iredale will seek a start when Wehen Wiesbaden play host to Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday at 4:30am (AEDT).

Lachlan Jackson played a full game as Suwon FC lost 2-1 late to Busan l’Park in the K-League 1 Qualification final.

Connor Pain's Al-Oroba went down 3-1 to Al Kholood on Wednesday in the Saudi Arabian second division.

Zachary Duncan didn’t play in AGF Aarhus’ 2-0 win over Brondby in the DBU Pokalen on Friday morning. Duncan will hope for some game time on Monday at 1:30am (AEDT) against the same opposition in the Danish Superligaen.

Ryan Edwards played all of SD Amorebieta’s 1-0 victory over Levante in the Spanish Copa del Rey. The experienced striker should play against when Real Valladolid visit on Sunday at 2:15am (AEDT).

In Scotland’s Championship, Nikola Ujdur looks set to earn another consecutive start for Inverness Caledonian Thistle as they travel to Queen’s Park on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT).

Liam Chipperfield could be in action on Saturday at 6:15am (AEDT) when Sion take on Thun in the Swiss Challenge League.

Brendan Hamill played all of Mohun Bagan’s 2-2 draw with Odisha FC in the Indian Super League. Hamill may play again for Mohun when they do battle with Maziya on Monday at 9:00 pm (AEDT).

Anthony Kalik will be eager to carry on a positive performance last time out in the Croatian 1. Division when Hajduk Split travel to NK Lokomotiva on Saturday at 3:30 am (AEDT).

Al Hassan Toure came on in the 78th minute of Sanliufaspor’s 2-0 defeat to Basaksehir on Friday morning in the Turkish Cup. The former Macarthur FC winger could play again when his side travel to Eyupspor on Monday at 3:00am (AEDT) in Turkey’s 1. Lig.
