Aussies Abroad: Midweek goal for Yengi, big injury news, Socceroos' Belgian battle

Aussies Abroad faced another gruelling set of midweek fixtures ahead of some more Aussie clashes across Europe. 

Kusini Yengi scored his third goal of the EFL League One campaign, while Belgium sees two Aussie left-backs go head-to-head.

Mathew Ryan (cap #555) will be out for several weeks following cheekbone surgery, which means missing several crucial matches for AZ Alkmaar. 

Garang Kuol (cap #627) will target some minutes off the bench when FC Volendam travel to SC Heerenveen on Sunday at 7:00 AM (AEDT) in Eredivisie.

Awer Mabil (cap #597) is a doubt for Grasshopper’s match against Yverdon on Sunday at 6:30 am (AEDT) in the Swiss Super League, after being withdrawn early with injury last weekend.

Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) should both feature for St. Pauli when they take on John Iredale’s Wehen Wiesbaden in the final round before the 2. Bundesliga breaks until next year.

There will be plenty of EFL Championship action this weekend.

Cameron Burgess (cap #633) and Massimo Luongo (cap #571) played full games for Ipswich Town as they edged past Watford 2-1 on Wednesday. The pair should feature again when Ipswich host Norwich City on Saturday at 11:30 pm (AEDT).

Sam Silvera (cap #634) came on in the 83rd minute of Middlesbrough’s 2-0 defeat to Hull City on Thursday morning, while Tom Glover remained on the bench. Silvera and Glover will seek minutes when Middlesbrough take on Swansea at 2:00 am (AEDT) on Sunday, looking to push towards the play-off places.

In EFL League One, Kenneth Dougall (cap #608) should start for Blackpool when Cambridge United visit on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT). Ashley Maynard-Brewer looks set to start in goal again for Charlton Athletic in their away game against Barnsley at the same time.

Yengi and Robertson will hope to have earned another start when Pompey travel to Shrewsbury Town on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT). 

The Scottish Premiership will have some more high-stakes fixtures for Socceroos as the battle for the play-off spots continues to heat up.

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) will hope his good performance last weekend earns him a start for St. Mirren in their match against Motherwell at 2:00 am (AEDT) on Sunday.

Kye Rowles (cap #622) will travel with Hearts for their battle with table-topping Celtic on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT). Cameron Devlin (cap #625) and Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) remain injury doubts. Marco Tilio (cap #616) could be back in the team for Celtic as he continues to recover from injury.

Martin Boyle (cap #599) and James Jeggo (cap #601) will be involved for Hibernian when they play St Johnstone on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT). Lewis Miller (cap #635) should also return from suspension for Hibs. They take on fellow Socceroo Ryan McGowan (cap #546), who looks likely to start for St. Johnstone.

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) should start in defence for Hamilton Academical for their title battle with Falkirk in the Scottish League One on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Milos Degenek (cap #585) was on the bench for FK Crvena Zvezda's UEFA Champions League defeat to Manchester City on Thursday morning. Degenek could get some minutes in the Serbian Super Liga against FK Spartak Subotica on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Denis Genreau (cap #610) came on in the 67th minute to help Toulouse past LASK 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League, qualifying for the knockout stages. Genreau could get some further playing time on Monday at 1:00 am (AEDT) for Toulouse’s game against Rennes in Ligue 1. 

Mohamed Toure (cap #636) could be in the squad when Paris FC travel to Valenciennes in Ligue 2 on Sunday at 5:00 am (AEDT).

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) will be eager to return to the starting XI for Parma for their away trip to Cosenza in Serie B.

Two Socceroo left-backs clash on Saturday at 6:45 am (AEDT) when Jason Davidson (cap #545)’s Eupen travel to Jordan Bos (cap #632)’s Westerlo in the Belgian First Division A.

Also in the Belgian top flight, Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) will endeavour to make it back-to-back starts for Standard Liege when they host Sporting Charleroi on Sunday at 6:45 am (AEDT).

In the Saudi Pro League, Craig Goodwin (cap #562) will hope to impress when Al-Wehda face league leaders Al Hilal on Saturday at 5:00 am (AEDT).

Bailey Wright (cap #576) played a full game for Lion City Sailors in their 2-0 loss to Kitchee in the AFC Champions League on Wednesday night. The result confirmed the Sailors' exit from the competition. 

Jason Cummings (cap #626) should start up front when Mohun Bagan SG face Northeast United FC in the Indian Super League on Saturday at 1:30 am (AEDT).

Three Olyroos could get some minutes over the weekend in the English leagues.

In the EFL Championship, Nectarios Triantis was on the bench as Sunderland edged out Leeds 1-0 on Wednesday morning. The defender may get on the field when Sunderland travel to Bristol City on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Nicholas Bilokapic should be in goal for Peterborough United when the side take on Fleetwood at 2:00 am (AEDT) on Sunday.

Cameron Peupion could be in action for Cheltenham Town when they host Leyton Orient on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Calem Nieuwenhof could start in midfield when Hearts face Celtic on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT) in the Scottish Premiership.

Adrian Segecic seeks another start for FC Dordrecht in their Eerste Divisie game against Telstar on Saturday at 6:00 am (AEDT).

Louis D’Arrigo should feature in Lechia Gdansk’s final game until the new year when they travel to Motor Lublin on Sunday at 6:00 am (AEDT) in the Polish 1 Liga.

Other Aussies

Connor Pain’s Al Oroba lost 2-0 to Al Jandal in the Saudi second tier on Wednesday.

Liam Chipperfield scored an hour in for Sion before the side conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 1-1 with Stade Nyonnais in the Swiss Super League on Wednesday. Chipperfield should play Sion’s last game until the new year on Saturday at 6:15 am (AEDT) against Schaffhausen. 

John Iredale could start again when Wehen Wiesbaden play their final game of the year on Sunday at 11:30 pm (AEDT) in the 2. Bundesliga against St. Pauli.

Jacob Chapman missed Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat to Preston North End on Wednesday in the EFL Championship. However, he could be back on the bench for Huddersfield against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Jack Iredale played the final third of Bolton Wanderers’ 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth on Tuesday morning in EFL League One. The centre-back could be restored to the starting lineup for Bolton’s home fixture against Bristol Rovers on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

In EFL League Two, Dean Bouzanis could return in goal when Sutton United face league leaders Stockport County on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT). Jay Rich-Baghuelou may be back in the Accrington Stanley team for their against Crewe Alexandria at the same time.

Deni Juric picked up an injury, so he won't get on the field for Dinamo’s Croatian 1. Division clash with Anthony Kalik’s Hajduk Split on Monday at 3:15 am (AEDT).

Nikola Ujdur was withdrawn in the 84th minute of Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s 2-1 loss to Greenock Morton in the Scottish Championship on Wednesday. Ujdur should start again when Inverness host Arbroath on Sunday at 2:00 am (AEDT).

Ryan Edwards could start for SD Amorebieta in their home game against Real Zaragoza in the Spanish La Liga 2 on Monday at 4:30 am (AEDT).

Christian Volpato suffered a late defeat with Sassuolo conceding twice in stoppage time after coming on in the 81st minute to lose 2-1 to Cagliari in Serie A on Tuesday morning. Volpato could get some more game time on Monday at 1:00 am (AEDT) when Sassuolo visit Udinese. 

Brendan Hamill look set to start in defence in the Indian Super League for Mohun Bagan SG on Saturday at 1:30 am (AEDT).

Ryan Lambert should start again when Kuala Lumpur City host Sri Pahang in the Malaysia Super League on Sunday at 12:00 am (AEDT). Shane Lowry could be back in action for Johor Darul Ta’zim on Saturday at 8:30 pm (AEDT) in the same competition.
