Aussies Abroad: Silvera scores match winner, Socceroos impress in upset over Celtic

It was a thrilling week of action for our Aussies Abroad, with some tense head-to-head clashes in Europe. 

A couple of Subway Socceroos defenders were integral in helping Hearts upset Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic, while two forwards continued to make headlines elsewhere with goals.

Subway Socceroos

Craig Goodwin (cap #562) was taken off in the 90th minute as Al-Wehda lost 2-0 to Al Hilal on Saturday in the Saudi Pro League.

Jordan Bos (cap #632) won the battle of the left backs against Jason Davidson (cap #545) as Westerlo defeated KAS Eupen 2-0 on Saturday in the Belgian First Division A. Both players got through full games for their respective teams.

Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) also played all of Standard Liege’s 0-0 draw with Sporting Charleroi in Belgium’s top flight. 

In the EFL Championship, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) and Massimo Luongo (cap #571) started Ipswich Town’s 2-2 draw with Norwich on Sunday. Burgess played all of the game, while Luongo was substituted in the 90th minute.

Samuel Silvera (cap #634) scored the winning goal off the bench for Middlesbrough against Swansea City, while Tom Glover came on in the 90th minute of the 2-1 victory to make his Championship debut.

In the EFL League One, Ashley Maynard-Brewer was in goal as Charlton drew 1-1 with Barnsley on Sunday.

Alexander Robertson (cap #630) and Kusini Yengi (cap #638) started for Portsmouth as the league leaders downed Shrewsbury Town 3-0 on Sunday. Robertson played the full game, and Yengi got through 72 minutes.

In the Scottish Premiership, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played the full match for St. Mirren in their 0-0 draw with Motherwell on Sunday. 

Kye Rowles (cap #622) and Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) were instrumental from the start in Hearts’ 2-0 stunning of league leaders Celtic on Sunday.

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played all of St Johnstone’s 1-0 victory over Hibernian on Sunday. Martin Boyle (cap #599) and James Jeggo (cap #601) played a full game for Hibernian, while Lewis Miller (cap #635) played the first half for the side.

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) played a full game for Hamilton Academical as they went down 3-1 to Falkirk in the Scottish League One.

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) kept a clean sheet for 10-man Parma in their 0-0 draw with Cosenza on Sunday to remain on top in Serie B.

Garang Kuol (cap #627) remained on the bench as FC Volendam beat SC Heerenveen 2-1 in the Eredivisie on Sunday.

Milos Degenek (cap #585) was an unused substitute for Crvena Zvezda in their 4-1 win against Spartak Subotica in the Serbian SuperLiga on Sunday.

Denis Genreau (cap #610) was on the bench for Toulouse’s 0-0 draw with Rennes in Ligue 1 on Monday.

Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played a full game for St. Pauli in their 1-1 draw with Wehen Wiesbaden on Monday in the 2. Bundesliga. Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) came on in the 85th minute for the side.

On Saturday, Jason Cummings (cap #626) scored a goal and played an hour for Mohun Bagan in their 3-1 win over Northeast United in the Indian Super League. Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) made his return to the team, playing the final 20 minutes.

Subway Olyroos

Adrian Segecic remained on the bench for FC Dordrecht’s 2-0 win over Telstar in the Eerste Visie on Saturday.

Nectarios Triantis was on the Sunderland bench for their 1-0 loss to Bristol City on Sunday in the EFL Championship.

In the EFL League One, Cameron Peupion was on the bench Cheltenham went down 2-1 to Leyton Orient on Sunday morning. Nicholas Bilokapic was unbeatable in goal for Peterborough United in their 1-0 win against Fleetwood Town on Sunday.

Louis D’Arrigo was brought on in the 26th minute of Lechia Gdansk’s 1-0 loss to Motor Lubin in the Polish l Liga on Sunday.

Other Aussies

Liam Chipperfield played a full game for FC Sion in their 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Schaffhausen on Saturday morning in the Swiss Challenge League.

Brendan Hamill played all of Mohun Bagan SG’s 3-1 victory over Northeast United in the Indian Super League on Saturday.

Nikola Ujdur played the first half in Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s 2-1 defeat to Arbroath on Sunday in the Scottish Championship.

Jack Iredale played 72 minutes for Bolton Wanderers as they went down 2-1 to Bristol Rovers on Sunday in the EFL League One.

Dean Bouzanis was in goal for Sutton United’s 8-0 loss to Stockport County on Sunday in the EFL League Two.

Ryan Lambert played 81 minutes for Kuala Lumpur City as they drew 0-0 with Pahang on Sunday in the Malaysian Super League.

John Iredale came on after an hour and earned a point for Wehen Wiesbaden against St. Pauli with a goal in the 84th minute on Sunday in 2. Bundesliga.

On Monday, Deni Juric stayed on the Hajduk Split bench for their 0-0 draw with Dinamo Zagreb in the Croatian HNL.

Christian Volpato came off the bench in the 56th minute to help Sassuolo fight from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Udinese in Serie A on Monday.

Ryan Edwards played the final 10 minutes for SD Amorebieta as they drew 1-1 with Real Zaragoza on Monday in La Liga 2.
