Aussies Abroad: Match winners, playmakers and key contributors in huge weekend

It was a productive week for our Aussies Abroad, as they stole the headlines across a number of leagues.

Here's the wrap following a top weekend of action.

Subway Socceroos

There were three Socceroos in action on Saturday morning.

Craig Goodwin (cap #562) continued his fine start to his second spell with Al Wehda in the Saudi Pro League, scoring early, before having another ruled out for offside in a 4-0 victory over Abha.


Over to Belgian First Division A, where Aiden O’Neill’s (cap #629) Standard Liege shared the points in a 0-0 stalemate with Jordan Bos’ (cap #632) Westerlo.

O’Neill remained an unused substitute for Standard Liege, while Jordan Bos got a solid 81 minutes on his return to the Westerlo team following a month out after the removal of his appendix.

In Japan, Mitchell Duke (cap #559) made it seven goals for the season, scoring Machida Zelvia’s first in a 6-0 smashing of V-Varen Nagasaki on Saturday in J2 League.


In J1 League on Saturday, Mitchell Langerak (#566) started in goal for Nagoya Grampus’ 1-1 draw with Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, as Thomas Deng (#598) was an unused substitute for Albirex Niigata’s 3-1 win against Yokohama.

Six Aussies started on the field when St. Mirren edged out Hearts 1-0 on Sunday morning in the Scottish Premiership, a record for the most amount of Aussies on the field at the same time.

Ryan Strain (cap #624) scored the winning goal seven minutes in for St Mirren, continuing his fine record against Hearts, and Keanu Baccus (cap #628) also played an hour for the Saints.


Subway Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof played a full game for Hearts, Nathan Atkinson (cap #620) went off injured just before the break, and Kye Rowles (cap #622) got through an hour. Cameron Devlin (cap #625) also played 76 minutes for Hearts.

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, James Jeggo (#601) and Martin Boyle (cap #599) were important elements of Hibernian’s 2-0 win against St Johnstone. Jeggo created two chances from midfield, while Boyle produced a strong display off the left.

However, Lewis Miller stole the headlines for Hibernian, the Olyroo fullback scoring Hibs' first goal in a match-winning performance.

Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) backed up his spectacular goal last week with a top all-round performance as St Pauli beat Schalke 3-1 on Sunday in 2. Bundesliga. 

Jason Cummings (cap #626) and Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) guided Mohan Bagan SG to a 3-1 victory over Punjab FC on Sunday on the opening day of the Indian Super League, both finding the scoresheet.


There were lots of Australians taking the field in the EFL Championship. 

Riley McGree (cap #609) starred for Middlesbrough on Sunday, scoring his first goal of the Championship season in a 2-1 win over Southampton. Sammy Silvera (cap #634) came on in the 90th minute, Tom Glover stayed on the bench.


Massimo Luongo (cap #571) was equally impactful for Ipswich Town, scoring the winning goal in a 4-3 victory against Blackburn Rovers on the same day.


Cameron Burgess (cap #633) was also impressive for the Blues, the defender picking up an assist for his first goal contribution of the campaign.


On Sunday, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played the first half of Blackpool’s 4-1 victory against Reading.

In EFL League One, Alexander Robertson (cap #630) provided an assist for Portsmouth’s opening goal in a 2-1 win against Lincoln on Sunday.


Ashley Maynard-Brewer was on the bench to watch Charlton Athletic get up 3-1 against Wycombe on Sunday.

Awer Mabil (cap #597) played the second half for Grasshopper in their 1-1 draw with St. Gallen on Sunday in Switzerland, while Garang Kuol (cap #627) got through 72 minutes of Voldendam's 2-2 draw against Heracles in Eredivisie the same day. 


Brad Smith (cap #575) was rewarded with a start for Houston Dynamo against Sporting KC following his assist in midweek, playing a full game as the team went down 2-1 on Sunday in Major League Soccer.

Monday saw lots of Socceroos on the field across Europe's competitions. 

James Holland (cap #508) played 74 minutes as Austria Wien went down 2-1 to Altach in the Austrian Bundesliga. 

Denis Genreau (cap #610) got a little over an hour in Toulouse's 2-1 Ligue 1 defeat against Lens, as Mathew Ryan (cap #555) helped put AZ's midweek nightmare behind them keeping another Eredivisie clean sheet in a 3-0 victory against PEC Zwolle. 


Alessandro Circati put in a star performance for Parma, firing home a late equaliser for the hosts to snatch a point against Sampdoria in Serie B. It was also the 19-year-old's first professional goal.


Jason Davidson (cap #545) played a full game as Eupen lost 2-1 to Gent in Belgian First Division A. 

Subway Olyroos

Onto the Olyroos, starting with the Premier League on Sunday where Tyrese Francois made the Fulham squad again as they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace.

Several Olyroos were involved in EFL League One matches on Sunday.

Cameron Peupion appeared for the final 20 minutes of Stevenage’s 3-0 loss to Cheltenham Town.

Caleb Watts came on at halftime as Exeter City went down 3-0 to Oxford United, and Jay Rich-Baghuelou saw red just before halftime as Accrington Stanley lost 2-0 to Tranmere Rovers.

Nicholas Bilokapic put in an assured performance in goal for Peterborough in a 1-1 draw with Jack Iredale's Bolton Wanderers; the defender played the whole game as well.

On Monday morning, Nectarios Triantis sat on the bench as Sunderland lost 1-0 to Cardiff City in the English Championship.  

In Norway's Eliteserien, Keegan Jelacic was brought off at halftime in Stabaek's 1-1 draw with Aalesund on Sunday.  

On Monday, Patrick Yazbek was brought on at the hour mark of Vikings' thrilling 4-3 victory over Sanderfjord to see the team stay on top of Eliteserien. 

As mentioned above, Calem Nieuwenhof played a full game for Hearts against St Mirren while Lewis Miller scored his first goal for Hibernian in their win over St Johnstone.


Subway Young Socceroos/U18

Adrian Segecic played a full game as FC Dordrecht shared the points in a 0-0 draw with Jong AZ Alkmaar on Saturday in Eerste Divisie.

  • Patrick Flottman started Seongnam FC’s 1-0 loss to Cheongju on Saturday in K League 2.

  • In EFL League Two, Dean Bouzanis started in between the sticks for Sutton United’s 1-1 draw with MK Dons on Sunday.

  • John Iredale played the final 16 minutes as his SV Wehen Wiesbaden lost 2-0 to Elversberg on Sunday in 2. Bundesliga.

  • Liam Chipperfield played on Saturday morning, getting a full game for FC Sion against FC Schaffhausen as they drew 1-1 in the Swiss Challenge League.

  • Christian Volpato watched on from the bench as Sassuolo stunned Juventus 4-2 in Serie A on Sunday.

  • Anthony Kalik saw out the dying embers of Hadjuk Split’s 1-0 win over NK Lokomotiva on Sunday in Croatia's HNL.

  • In France’s Ligue 2 on Sunday, Mohamed Toure played the last six minutes of Paris FC’s 2-1 loss to AC Ajaccio.

  • Tass Mourdoukoutas remained a substitute in Canada as York United went down 1-0 to Cavalry on Sunday.

  • In Finland on Sunday, Tete Yengi came on in the 69th minute for Kupion Palloseura in a 1-0 win against FC Inter Turku.

  • Panagiotis Armenakas performed well for Phoenix Rising FC in their 1-1 draw with El Paso Locomotive FC, creating four chances as well as a big chance on Sunday. 
  • Stefan Mauk helped Fagiano Okayama to a 2-1 victory over Jubilo Iwata, playing the final 19 minutes on Sunday in the J2 League. 
  • Aaron Calver played all of Gwangju FC's 1-0 loss to Jeonbuk FC on Sunday. 
  • On Sunday night, Lachlan Jackson came on for the second half of Suwon FC’s 3-2 defeat to K League 1 league leaders Ulsan Hyundai.

  • Also in the K League 1 on Sunday night, Alexander Grant helped keep a clean sheet in Pohang Steelers’ 0-0 draw with Daegu FC.

  • Zachary Duncan remained a substitute as AGF Aarhus took a point in a 1-1 draw with Randers FC in the Danish Superliga on Monday.
  • Ryan Edwards played all of SD Amorebieta's 3-1 loss to Villarreal B on Monday in Spain's LaLiga2.
