Aussies Abroad: Boyle and Irvine on target

Aussies Abroad were in form over the weekend as they led their teams to important results ahead of the busy festive period. 

There were stars in Scotland and Germany as Subway Socceroos continue to jostle for positions ahead of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ next month.

Subway Socceroos

Jordan Bos (cap #632) put in a solid performance at left-back for KVC Westerlo in their 2-1 win against Kortrijk in the Belgian First Division A on Saturday morning. 


Mathew Ryan (cap #555) was excellent in goal for AZ Alkmaar as the side defeated Almere City 4-1 on Sunday morning to keep them in the top three of Eredivisie.

Awer Mabil (cap #597) picked up an injury 12 minutes into Grasshopper’s 1-0 win over Basel in the Swiss Super League on Sunday morning.

Several Socceroos starred in Scotland over the weekend, starting in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) came on in the 18th minute of St Mirren’s 2-0 win over Ross Country, putting in a composed midfield display.

Kye Rowles (cap #622) and Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof started in Hearts’ 2-1 loss to Aberdeen on Sunday morning. Rowles played the full game and Nieuwenhoff played 72 minutes.

Martin Boyle (cap #599) won the points for Hibernian in their 1-0 win over Livingston, firing home the winning goal 28 minutes in. James Jeggo (cap #601) played the final 20 minutes for Hibs. 

Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played a full game for St. Johnstone in their 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Sunday. 

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) played all of Hamilton Academical’s 0-0 stalemate in the Scottish League One on Sunday morning.

In Germany’s 2. Bundesliga, St. Pauli drew 1-1 with bottom side VfL Osnabruck on Sunday morning with Jackson Irvine (#568) and Connor Metcalfe (#611) featuring for St. Pauli. Irvine snatched an early goal six minutes in, while Metcalfe came on in the 68th minute.  

Over to England in the EFL Championship, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) got one over on some of his Socceroos teammates as Ipswich Town defeated Middlesbrough 2-0 on Sunday. Massimo Luongo (cap #571) missed the match for the side. For Middlesbrough, Sam Silvera (cap #634) came on in the 70th minute, while Tom Glover remained on the bench.

Harry Souttar (cap #606) sat on the bench for Leicester City against Plymouth Argyle on Sunday. 

On Sunday, Kenneth Dougall (cap #608) played 90 minutes of Blackpool’s 3-0 win against Carlisle in the EFL League One.

Also in EFL League One on the same day, Ashley Maynard-Brewer played in goal for Charlton Athletic as the side drew 2-2 with Cambridge United.

Further on Sunday, James Holland (#508) came on in stoppage time for Austria Wien as they drew 2-2 with SK Austria Klagen in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Craig Goodwin (cap #562) was taken off in the 90th minute of Al-Wehda’s 2-0 win against Al Akhdoud on Sunday in the Saudi Pro League.

Milos Degenek (cap #585) was a substitute for Crvena Zvezda's 3-1 victory over Mladost Lucani on Monday in the Serbian SuperLiga. 

Denis Genreau (cap #610) stayed on the bench for Toulouse's 3-0 defeat to Lyon on Monday morning in Ligue 1. 

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) was on the bench for Parma's 3-3 draw with Palermo on Monday in Serie B. 

Two Socceroos featured in Belgium on Monday morning in First Division A. 

Jason Davidson (cap #545) played all of Eupen's 3-1 defeat to Genk, while Aiden O'Neill (cap #629) also got through a full game for Standard Liege in a 2-2 draw with Anderlecht. 

Olyroos

Adrian Segecic was taken off after an hour in FC Dordrecht’s 3-1 loss to VVV-Venlo in the Eerste Divisie on Saturday morning.

Nectarios Triantis was on the bench for Sunderland's 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday night. 

Two Olyroos took the field in the EFL League One on Sunday.

Nicholas Bilokapic was pivotal in Peterborough United keeping a clean sheet in their 3-0 win.

Cameron Peupion played the last half an hour of Cheltenham Town’s 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers.

On the same day, Calem Nieuwenhof played 72 minutes for Hearts in a 2-1 defeat against Aberdeen, picking up a yellow card. 

Louis D'Arrigo played the final 10 minutes of Lechia Gdansk's 1-0 win in the Polish I Liga on Sunday. 

Other Aussies

Liam Chipperfield remained an unused substitute as Sion drew 1-1 with Thun on Saturday morning in the Swiss Challenge League.

Anthony Kalik came on in the 55th minute to help Hajduk Split earn a point in a 1-1 draw with NK Lokomotiva on Saturday in the Croatian 1. Division.

John Iredale played a little over an hour for Wehen Wiesbaden in their 3-1 defeat to Eintranct Braunschweig on Saturday in the German 2. Bundesliga. 

Deni Juric remained on the bench in Dinamo Zagreb’s 1-0 win against Rudes on Sunday morning in the Croatian top flight.

Nikola Ujdur scored his maiden goal for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in their 4-1 victory over Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship on Sunday morning.

Also on Sunday, Ryan Edwards was brought on in the 63rd minute of SD Amorebieta’s 2-1 defeat to Real Valladolid.
