Around the grounds: McBreen with a foot in both camps ahead of Round of 16 blockbuster

He’s one of Edgeworth Eagles’ key players who happens to work for their FFA Cup 2019 Round of 16 opponents Newcastle Jets.

It’s been an interesting build-up to Wednesday night’s huge Hunter region match-up for Edgeworth striker Daniel McBreen.

The former Hyundai A-League star is likely to be a key figure if the powerful Northern NSW NPL outfit are to pull off a shock against the Hyundai A-League side at Jack McLaughlin Oval.

But if he is to score the goal to sees the Eagles cause a Cup boilover, he’d be doing so at the expense of his employers, with McBreen a junior coach and community officer at the Jets.

Maybe that explains why the 42-year-old attacker was wearing Jets track pants and an Edgeworth top during media duties on Monday.

Rose’s stunner a shot or cross?

McBreen isn’t the only ex-Hyundai A-League star in the Edgeworth squad, with Central Coast Mariners championship-winner Josh Rose also in Damien Zane’s squad.

And Rose is in sensational form for the Eagles, scoring direct from a corner in their 4-1 win over Weston Workers on the weekend.

While Rose says the unconventional goal was deliberate, others weren’t so sure.

Langlois lives up to his word with his Victory winner

Of course, the Jets booked their spot in the last 16 thanks to their epic come-from-behind 3-2 win over Melbourne Victory in the Round of 32.

Teenager Patrick Langlois was the hero for Ernie Merrick’s side on the night, coming off the bench to score a brilliant winner in extra-time.

And the impressive youngster revealed on Monday he prompted his winning goal to the Jets boss as he was about to enter the fray at AAMI Park.

“As I was walking on [to the pitch] Ernie asked me ‘are you going to score?’,” Langlois explains.

“I said ‘yes, I’m going to score the winner’ and when I came back into the change rooms it was all fun and games and I just said [to Merrick] ‘I told you so’.”

Langlois is in line to start at the back for the Jets in Wednesday night’s clash with Edgeworth, which will be shown LIVE on Fox Sports.

Verbeek wary of free-scoring Olympic FC

Adelaide United are also up against NPL opposition on Wednesday night as they head to Perry Park in Brisbane to face Olympic FC.

The Queensland NPL outfit were one of the most impressive performers in the Round of 32, putting five goals past highly-rated Western Australian side Bayswater City.

It was a performance that certainly impressed Reds boss Gertjan Verbeek, who says his side won’t be underestimating the Member Federation club.

“I like the way they play, they want to play football and build up,” Verbeek told reporters on Monday.

“The captain is all over the field, on paper he’s a right winger but you see him everywhere.

“The number 9 is scoring a lot of goals and the whole team is scoring a lot of goals. They are fourth in Queensland but they have the most goals in that competition which says enough.

“They are an attacking team but because they attack a lot they also have their problems in defence.”

Verbeek confirmed new recruit Kristian Opseth wouldn’t travel to Brisbane for the match as he continues to build his fitness ahead of the new Hyundai A-League season.
