Around the Grounds: Adrian drops return hint, ex-City man set for Man United return, wedding bells in Adelaide

Former Sydney FC star Adrian Mierzejewski has hinted at a shock Hyundai A-League return.

Mierzejewski, 32, departed the Sky Blues one season into a three-year deal when he signed for Chinese Super League outfit Changchun Yatai in July 2018.

The Poland international was snared by fellow Chinese outfit Chongqing Dangdai in February, where he has contributed three goals and two assists in 10 appearances.

However, Mierzejewski raised eyebrows of Hyundai A-League fans by posting a cryptic tweet on Thursday afternoon, indicating a possible return to Australia.

He scored 13 goals in 25 Hyundai A-League appearances for Sydney FC in 2017/18 and was widely hailed as the season's standout player, earning the Johnny Warren Medal and FOX Sports' Player of the Year title as the Sky Blues won the Premiership and the 2017 FFA Cup.

He has made 41 appearances for the Poland national team, scoring three goals, and played in his homeland, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as his stints in Australia and China.

Joyce and Solskjaer to unite?

Former Melbourne City boss Warren Joyce has yet to pick up a new job since leaving the Hyundai A-League club in May, but if reports are to be believed he could soon be settling into a role in Manchester, England.

Joyce was not re-signed by City at the end of the 2018/19 campaign after his side finished the regular season in fifth place and were bundled out by Adelaide United in the Elimination Final.

But according to a report in The Sun, Joyce is set to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff at Manchester United.

The 54-year-old, who spent eight years as a coach at Old Trafford and was co-manager of the reserves with Solskjaer from 2008-2010, is set to be the new U23 boss to replace the sacked Ricky Sbragia.

Joyce is highly regarded at the Red Devils, and is credited with helping develop the likes of England stars Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, while he also helped bring Paul Pogba through into the first team during the player's first stint at the club.

United officials are hoping Joyce’s return could convince Pogba to remain at the club, with Juventus and Real Madrid reportedly interested in the French FIFA World Cup winner.

If Joyce does link up once more with Solskjaer, he could be looking at a swift return to Australia. United will be heading Down Under next month for pre-season matches against Perth Glory and Leeds United.

Wedding bells set to ring in Adelaide

It’s been a busy start to the off-season for Adelaide United stars in Jordan Elsey and Nikola Mileusnic.

Defender Elsey and his long-time girlfriend Megan Ryan were engaged during a trip to Japan this week, while midfielder Mileusnic popped the question to his partner Masa Smiljanic in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Elsey told the Adelaide Advertiser that he was more nervous proposing than when he took a penalty in the thrilling Semi Final against Perth Glory last month.

“We had a beautiful dinner and I was waiting for the dessert to come out which had 'Megan will you marry me' written on it and then I stood up and got down on one knee and asked her,” Elsey, who scored from the spot against Glory, explained.

“I was more nervous to propose than I was to take the penalty in the Semi Final against Perth Glory. She got a little teary and said yes, of course.”
