Aloisi 'angry' with Roar performance

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi said he was “angry” and frustrated after watching his side start slowly in another Hyundai A-League encounter.

The Roar remain winless in the 2018/19 Season after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Perth Glory on Saturday evening.

And Aloisi pulled no punches in his assessment of Brisbane’s performance afterwards.

Asked what mood he was in, Aloisi responded: “Angry. Angry because the way we started. 

“We gave them too much space and time, especially at the start. We were too stretched and it wasn’t good enough.

“We can’t keep on starting like that. You come away from home and you expect that the opposition are going to come at you a little bit, but you can’t give them that much space.

“Once we started to actually condense the space a little bit, we started to make it hard for them and we started to get into the game.

“But when you’re chasing all the time, it’s not going to be that easy … but we showed that when we did play, we were able to hurt them just as much as they hurt us.”

Aloisi said the poor starts were becoming a concerning pattern, even if his side had shown they were “a good footballing team” in spells.

“It happened the first game where we should have won … we were chasing the game after four minutes," he said.

“Last week it took us 15 minutes to get into the game. We need to get into the game straight away. That's what disappoints me. 

“We worked on how we could stop them from playing out and how we could press them but the first goal we concede we're pressing and they go long and we get caught out, it just wasn't good enough. We have to get better. 

“We show in the first three games that we're a good footballing team but you can't give the opposition that time and space.

"We just have to make sure that we’re on from the start. I think that's easy. I think that’s the easiest thing to do.

"We have to put the opposition on the back foot straight away, don't let them put you on the back foot.”

Tony Popovic was delighted to have won his first home fixture as Perth Glory coach and singled out Andy Keogh for special praise after he scored the opener and set up Perth’s second.

“He looks a threat. It’s up to us to keep giving him the service,” he said.

“I’m delighted for Andy. We forget quickly that he missed 12 weeks of pre-season with an injury.

“I was surprised that he even was able to feature in the first game. He’s been outstanding and long may it continue.”
